La Chinoise. Everyone knows I love Godard's New Wave efforts, but after that he got into 'revolution' filmmaking. I don't really care for this phase of his career. His movies are disjointed(far more than his new wave movies), and it perhaps requires a certain level of awareness of the times.

Le Gai Savoir. Don't quite know what to make of this one. It's clearly not meant to be a narrative. Godard attempts to break down the essence of cinema. The word juxtaposition was made for this movie. I'd have to read a little bit more about the meanings to fully grasp it.

What did you hate about it ? I agree that it seemed more like a made for TV mini series than a big budget hollywood movie, but most of King's novels adaptations have that feel to it. I loved the Lovecraftian theme. The characters were all well drawn, a little over the top I agree especially the religious zealot - Miss Carmody. I was undecided in the middle of the movie, where i was thinking that it was like Lord of the Flies - grocery store version, but I liked the last half an hour of the movie. It was so much better than the other nonsense torture-porn movies we are subjected to these days.
SPOILER ALERT : I can see how most people might think that the ending was crap with the military arriving immediately after he shot his son and the other three but I guess that was exactly what Frank Darabont was going for. Even his previous movie Shawshank Redemption was about having faith in the human spirit. In the Mist, the lil band of survivors who make it to the car, had obviously lost all hope in humanity (after the ordeal in the super market) and swung so far in the opposite direction that they did not believe in the resilience of man to cope and find a solution. So the message pretty much was - Never give up hope. The final shot with Thomas Jane weeping like a madman when he realized what he had done and then they show the lady who had begged him for help earlier, being rescued by the military was pretty nice. Decent gutsy ending in my opinion. |

I watched 24 Hour Party People again last night. I love that film. Incapsulates everything I thought and felt about Manchester as a young teenager. How one city can have spawned such a disproportionately high number of great bands - AND be home to the greatest football team in the world - is beyond me.
