Yeah, it's in the OP... it's a staple Sci-Fi film of the last 20 years I would say.

I mentioned it because I tried watching it for the first time yesterday. I didn't like it. Not sure why.

The directors cut is far superior, but if it was that, guess it wasn't to your taste, sci-fi can be like that. Definitely finish it though either way.

Imagine that, a director knowing his vision better than a producer...

Here's coupe missing from your list, some of which are good, others not so much.

And I'll assume no one has mentioned Avitar because, of course, everyone has seen it.

the 6th Day
Pandorum
Soberberg's remake of Solaris
The Keep
ET
Moonraker
The Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind
Outlander
Splice
the 1st 2 Resident Evil movies
Push
Reign of Fire
Babylon AD
The Cell

and two classics that should be on any list like this
Dune
Close Encounters of the 3rd kind

Just in case you haven't seen it already, since I haven't seen it mentioned - The Prestige.

Though there are movies like 'The Abyss' that are much poorer as director's cuts. Amadeus and Bladerunner are both better as theatrical cuts as well. But for the most part I think you're right.

One of my favorite movies, probably not strictly sci-fi but good enough for me!

Thanks, some good ones in there! I already had Dune and Outland, but missing ET is pretty bad! Never really liked Close Encounters, go figure.

Resident Evil is an iffy one, but I suppose with a mad scientist you're watching sci-fi.

I am a big Bond fan , but this is maybe one of the worst Bond films , I would not even say it was Sci-Fi , some of it just happens to be set in space.
Mind you it does have one of the best one liners of any film.

How about Woody Allen's Sleeper?
Great list. Top films especially the original Day The Earth Stood Still. One of the rare occasions when aliens are the good guys and the human race is seen for what it is.

How about:

"Robinson Crusoe on Mars" (lot better than I ever thought it would be)
"Silent Running"
"War of the Worlds" (original)
"AI"
"The Time Machine" (original)
"Colossus: The Forbin Project" (one of the top five sci-fi's ever made)

Incidentally, "Bladerunner" is so over-rated. More style than substance.

Haven't seen the Reeves version, but I'm going to have to now, I had forgotten about it. The original didn't really do a lot for me, it was fine but it was missing most of the stuff that I like about sci-fi, like interesting sets and machines.

It's been too long since I watched Thy Fly or Westworld, I'll have to see them again.

I strongly disagree... I would say it fully deserves its standing as one of the greatest Sci-Fi movies ever... Superb for both its style and substance.

I must have seen Altered States about 20 times, but the last time I watched it was the first time I hadnt been on acid while doing so....definitely a better film on acid though it is good.

For pure mental (and probably not very good) sci-fi/fantasy you cant beat a bit of Zardoz

Poor re-telling of the original Michael Renee film. Sometimes films just can't be bettered and even harder to remake when the original was directed by Robert Wise. If you prefer sets & machines rather than a good story then I think you'll like the Reeves version.

Zardoz! How could i forget thee? Yeah, what a trippy film, way too long and almost unwatchable without being in an altered state. But certainly worth seeing, evocative even if it's extremely weird.

Agreed, a great example of reworking a novel into something that is excellent in its own right as a standalone film, not an easy task.

It's stretching it perhaps, but it's got a you-know-what in it, which is pretty sci-fi!

(What I said about Blade Runner above also applies to this film, sheer quality).

No Outlander... from 2008, starring the Guy who played Christ Jim Cevisial (sp)... all about some monster from space and a bountry hunter who come to earth and make life difficult for a bunch of vikings.

In truth Outland w. Sean Connery is a better film, holds up surprisingly well.

And you a right about Resident Evil... the first one is ok, maybe the 2nd but they go downhill fast after that.

and because of this list I watched "Monsters" last night, what a cracking little indie film.

Who says wasting all my spare time on the caf will ultimately lead to nothing good.

I also thought Monsters was a pleasant surprise. The chic was adorable and they did a good job of keeping the tension without using a lot of special effects. And I quite liked the ending, without wanting to give anything away it was great to see a different take on the space alien.

Ha ha, I read over most things too fast, that's funny. I saw Outland only recently myself, and I agree it was extremely watchable. The sets are great and while the acting isn't particularly good, it seems believable because the characters are outcasts and cruel dimwits.

So, eXistenZ....worst movie I've ever seen. How did anyone convince anyone to make it? Who could write such a pile of garbage? Good cast, though.

Here's the last list:

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Andromeda Strain
Avatar
Battle Royale
Babylon AD
Capricorn One
Deathrace 2000
Donnie Darko
ET the Extraterrestrial
Equilibrium
eXistenZ
Fantastic Planet
Fahrenheit 451
Flatliners
Frankenstein
I Am Legend
Invasion
Judge Dredd
Knowing
Legend of Galactic Heroes
Limitless
Megamind
Melancholia
Moonraker
Mysterious Island
Outbreak
Outlander
Pandorum
Pi
Primer
Push
Reign of Fire
Repo Man
Runaway
Space Cowboys
Splice
Silent Running
Signs
Starman
The 6th Day
The Astronaut's Wife
The Butterfly Effect
The Boys from Brazil
The Cell
The Happening
The Hidden [1987]
The Forgotten
The Lawnmower Man
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
The Lost Room
The Reanimator
The Thing
The Time Machine
The Time Traveler's Wife
The Thirteenth Floor
V the Series
V for Vendetta
Zardoz

That's probably an unconscious reaction to Matrix 3 being one of the films I hate the most.

There was an Anime film... I believe called "The Ani-matrix"... a series of animated short films based on the story behind the first Matrix film... which is clearly better than any of the 3 actual Matrix films.

Animatrix was absolutely fantastic, agreed. However, there's no way denying the first Matrix movie was groundbreaking shit back in 1999.

Chill out man! I love Serenity and Firefly to bits... they're probably my favourite film and tv show respectively, but at the same time, I can fully understand why someone wouldn't enjoy them, and particularly the film on it's own... as it's asking you to accept a lot of shit in a very short space of time... and if you're not into the whole Sci-Fi/Western element to it, then the acting/dialogue will come across as being pretty terrible.

As I say though, I love it... and mourn its passing on a daily basis... but Weaste is hardly controversial, or indeed alone in his criticisims.

His films are more miss than hit, the worst being that gangster flick with Goldie. But yeah, I'm a big fan too.

Saw the trailer for Beyond the Black Rainbow yesterday. The trailer is pretty damn good, but haven't heard good things about the movie. Still want to see it though.

I second Brwned's suggestion of "The Man From Earth" -- I thought it was great, even if they slipped about towards the end in my opinion. Great concept, and overall well executed.

Not a big Sci-Fi fan myself unless it's a bit slower and more of a "thinker" (Star Wars series being the obvious exception!) like that one and Moon, for instance. Thought Source Code was alright, nothing more. A bit predictable.

A couple of recent Sci-Fi's I did enjoy though was Attack the Block, a british movie from last year that was surprisingly entertaining, and Another Earth. Don't know if those have been mentioned already.

Another Earth is excellent , well written story , well worth a watch.

Star Trek, well damn, why didn't I think of that!

Oh, if you guys haven't seen 'Cube' you really must. It's about some people put in a giant cube [of smaller cubes] made by the gov't to, like, test people or something. And kill them. Even better than it sounds!

'The Man From Earth' was good, especially considering the extremely limited production value! Nothing all that sci-fi about it thought, really.
