Spartacus: Vengeance
Thought I'd create this to keep the series separated, mainly for spoiler reasons.
Saw the HD version on Sky1 last night and appetite was suitably whetted. The 'new' Spartacus did a decent job of replacing Whitfield but still needs some getting used to. Good to see some shots of Rome being built too. Still missing Batiatus's classic lines of fate being pushed up ar*e, hard, but the rest of the storyline has potential. Spoiler

Meh, still not impressed
Cant take to the new Spartacus, theres something too wooden about him. No charisma or something. The exchanges between him and Crixus are a bit bland compared to the first season. Also the new directing method is starting to get on my nerves. We get it, you want to be like the '300' but do you have to slow every bloody battle scene down, and have spots of blood on the camera for every fight? Its getting boring. theres also something wrong about watching 'gladiators' just standing around supposedly drinking and waving their willies about I fear for this show without Whitfield and Hannah. They WERE Season 1. No-one is capable of carrying this new season so far. I'll persist in the hope..but im not optimistic

Sure, we all struggle to cope with the lack of Whitfield and the new Spartavus, but fuck me, the newest episode was just an absolute cracker from start to finish, and
Spoiler
I still thoroughly enjoy the show and I can see this season only getting better and better now |

Love all the twists and side plots, and good to see gannickus back, he is a good character and to have him, spartacus, crixus and animaeous all together is

I finally decided to give it a shot after hesitating over Andy Whitfield's replacement. Currently watching episode number three.
At this point I have mixed feelings. I found the "Roman" part of the series still interesting, with actors having something to work with in terms of dialogue and a story line. The "gladiator" part has been a disappointment so far. The new Spartacus, try as he might, is no Andy, and it affects everything. He just doesn't have the presence and charisma of a man he was brought to replace. Pity. I'm getting a bit sick and tired of slow motion fighting scenes with blood splashing into the camera, enough of this Spartaaah bullshit already. Also, someone needs to remind the show creators that those Roman legionnaires were professional soldiers, well trained and battle hardened, not just some dummies that gladiators could practice their skills on. Finally, Naevia. It's bad enough the main character is played by a new man, and now this? WTF? |
