upgrading my ps2

had my ps2 for years and think its about time to upgrade, was looking to get a ps3 but found out that my ps2 games cant be played on it, a bit pissed of with that because have about 70 games. now looking at the x box elite, but read the info and you have to pay to go online unlike my ps2 where you just plug in and play, is that right and how much is it

If you can manage to pick up a 60GB PS3 then you could play your ps2 games but Sony have discontinued them so are now very hard to come by, they are only making 40GB machines for Europe for the moment and as you say can not play ps2 games.

I am not gonna argue which is better, a 360 or PS3, but the blu ray drive in the PS3 is certainly a advantage if you plan to use it as a movie player aswell.

I don't know i never played online on my ps2.
But on the PS3 its very straight forward, wireless and a ethernet port are integrated as opposed to a xbox which for a wireless connection (not sure about elite) you need to buy a adapter. Online play on a PS3 is also free, though not up to the quality yet of a 360 which however you have to pay a subscription for.

If you cant pick up a 60GB PS3 then you could trade your games at gamestation where you would get a deduction from the price for whichever system you decide on.
To get a indication of how much you might get for your games have a look at the cex.co.uk website and check its trade in or cash price for which gamestation will match if you trade with them.
Alternatively you could buy a 60GB PS3 from cex which will be second hand but they offer a 12 month warranty with them.

There are PS3s that can play PS2 games. Just one option, but you can pick up an original US 20GB (has a PS2 inside it) brand new on Amazon for $465 + $90 import shipping to have it within 4 days. That's a grand total of $555 or 300 quid! A new 250GB SATA 2.5 hard disk, say 60 quid?

You could have a fully backwards compatible PS3 with a 250GB hard disk for 360 quid. See what I did there?

My example of a US 20GB, it doesn't have wireless, you would have to stick an adapter into one the USB slots. Many people with a 360 don't buy the official adapter for the 360, but a much cheaper wireless bridge that you plug into the ethernet port.

80GB US models are still being made BTW, but still, like the old 60GB Euro model they are 50% hardware backwards compatible, the Emotion Engine is emulated in the Cell.

weaste mate, i knock nails in wood and slap bricks on top of each other, thats just gone right over my head, got the one about amazon 20GB, but putting a new hard drive in , is it easy, i realy am a bit clueless with this stuff

It is easy, there is probably a fair few guides online to do it just incase.

Very simple. Some people have a problem with the screw and strip the head, but I expect you would have no problem.

The only problem with importing one is that if something did break with it, then it would be a pain in the arse to send it back.

The 20GB also does not have wireless in the box, but the cheapest US 60GBs I can find are around $700 - I don't think that it would be worth it. The US 80GBs are also around the same price, and they only have 50% hardware backwards compatibility.

I'll try to list the different models and features off my head (without going into strange Jap models) - HDD size is obvious.

US/JAP 20GB (Launch model) - 4 USB ports, no wireless, no card readers, PS2 in the box. (No longer in production)
US/JAP 60GB (Launch model) - 4 USB ports, wireless, card readers, PS2 in the box. (No longer in production)
Europe 60GB (Launch model) - 4 USB ports, wireless, card readers, PS2 graphics chip in the box, PS2 central processor emulated on the Cell. (No longer in production)
US/JAP 80GB - 4 USB ports, wireless, card readers, PS2 graphics chip in the box, PS2 central processor emulated on the Cell.

All of the models above have their 2 main processors made at 90nm. Later models - the Europe and US/JAP 40GB and maybe some US/JAP 80GB now coming out are on 65nm (Sony is slowly moving towards 45nm). This means that they produce less heat (are much cooler, and quieter because less fan speed is required) and also consume less power. They also have better Bluetooth and Wi-Fi range.

US/JAP/Europe 40GB - 2 USB ports, wireless, no card readers, no PS2 backwards compatibility - possible in the future in software but also possible that it never happens.

One thing before you do. Films can be region locked. If you have a US PS3, it may not play all European movie disks. If this is important to you, then you will need to reconsider.

A US PS3 can me made to play non European disks - but you have to do something.

It will under Linux, which is easy to install, if a little bit of a pain in the arse in regards to a seamless hassle free experience.

They take up space. I have a SNES, an Atari 2600, etc. but they are not sat next to my PS3, they are nicely stored away.

Ahh the SNES, that was a great console. Super Metroid blitzed all other games on that system. Highest item count (without cheating) I managed to get was 98%. And actually that was the game I was playing when I first heard about the death of Princess Diana.

The game has many memories...

i tried a USB wireless dongle. No success.

Any should work that will work with your router. I'm not talking about one that you plug into a USB socket, but one that you connect to your 360 with the ethernet cable.

got two ps2s will keep them both - its realy a present for my son who wants to play the new gta and i want it for the other games you cant get on ps2, just thought it would be easier to have a ps3 that would play our older games

The USB ones will need the XB360 to recognise them, and re-route its network output to that USB port. Obviously, it has the drivers for the Microsoft device in its firmware and works without a problem. With the general purpose wireless bridges/repeaters, the XB360 simply thinks that it is connected to a normal router/modem with the wire.

If I have an encrypted Wireless router signal floating about will I be able to set up the PS3 to connect to that?

And if I have the 40gb model, will I need a wireless adapter? Can't believe I haven't got around to this yet.

The 20GB US/JAP launch model is the only one without built in wireless networking, so yours works straight out of the box.

PS3 supports both WEP and WPA over its wireless connection and can connect by B or G.
