FC United of Manchester reveals location of proposed stadium

FC UNITED OF MANCHESTER REVEALS LOCATION OF PROPOSED STADIUM

FC United of Manchester has announced plans to develop a football ground in Newton Heath, Manchester - the birthplace of Manchester United.

The supporter-owned club, established when the Glazer family took over Manchester United in May 2005, is proposing to include new and renovated community sports facilities and a multi-function community space at the 5,000-capacity stadium.

The club wants to provide state of the art facilities that will create new investment in the area and opportunities for local people in sports participation and physical activity, youth inclusion, education, health, employment and a range of other services.

The site for the development is the existing Ten Acres Lane sports centre, which is owned by Manchester City Council.

FC United, New East Manchester and Manchester City Council have been working closely over the past two years to develop the plans and consultation will now progress with local residents, community groups and FC United members who own the club.

FC United is working to secure the finance for the £3.5m development, which will include a public appeal for donations, a Community Shares issue and grant funding.

Club General Manager Andy Walsh said: “We are delighted to be able to make this announcement and discussions with the council have been very positive to date. The significance of this location is historical while it will also showcase a new model of facility development, based on football supporter ownership and community involvement.”

Manchester City Council’s Executive Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Mike Amesbury, said: “We have been supportive of this development to date and we are pleased to now take it to the next stage. While there is a way to go yet we feel that this will have significant local community benefits and bring an iconic supporter-owned club to Manchester.”

Eddie Smith, chief executive of urban regeneration company New East Manchester said: "We are working closely with FC United to help achieve their aspirations of acquiring land in Newton Heath for a new football ground. This is still very early stages but we are supportive of their proposals which would bring further regeneration benefits to east Manchester."

FC United hopes the development will be completed in the next two to three years, subject to consultation, funding and planning.

Why don't they simply play at the athletics track next to City's ground until they get more support?

I think that can hold around 7,000.

I was thinking that the pitch at Ten Acres Lane was built on top of an old cemetery, but it turns out it was Orford Road I was thinking of. Would be great if they could get this built at Ten Acres though.

pinched off the FC board...

A
Ceylon St. Much mooted first ground of United. Probably true given it's close proximity to the sheds. Scene of Salford10 and I tearing up the Middleton & District under 11s.
New houses were rumoured to be being built on streets bearing United legends names. The houses are there, but I'm not sure if the naming went ahead.

The bus stop to get off at coming from town. You can get the 24, 72, 82, 83, 180, 181, 182, 183, 184 from Oldham St/Lever St. The 82s run every ten minutes or better and will take ten minutes tops.

Church Street where the New Crown is is the centre of Newton Heath. There's a Greggs, Martins, off licence, bank, market, Netto, Iceland, Lidl (the holy trinity), and all the usual suspects on a small high street.

The huge stretch of land looking like a scruffy Central Park between our new ground (how cool does that sound?) and Church St is a marshy boggy area bordered by the Rochdale Canal to the north, and housing to the east and south.
It was somewhere here that Trevor Hardy aka The Beast of Manchester buried one of his victims. A bit of a downer to end on, but some fleshing out of the views of the maps on the main thread.

With SO MUCH information around, how do people get these simple facts wrong?

A. Ceylon Street was the ground where Newton Heath Locos played until as recently as the 1970s. Newton Heath L&YR F.C. played at North Road, which has been cropped off the edge of the map.

The new houses were built on the ground and were going to be named after players such as Bobby Charlton until the developers were informed that they'd made the same basic mistake in not realising there was more than one football club called Newton Heath (there were three, Newton Heath Athletic being the third).

G. Newton Heath Loco works was where Newton Heath Locos F.C. was formed. They were the team that played on Ceylon Street. Newton Heath L&YR F.C. were formed at the carriage and wagon works which was demolished at least 50 years ago. It was located on the patch of open ground next to the letter B.

Can't wait for them to be in the premier league (two decades from now), hopefully before Leeds.

Jubliant FC United fans are revelling in the news that the dream of having their own ground has become reality.

It was revealed last week that Manchester’s city council has provisionally given the go-ahead for the 5,000 capacity stadium to be built in Newton Heath.

And that decision has been greeted with resounding support from the Rebels’ followers, according to FCUM Radio commentator Keith ‘Keg’ Johnston.

“The feeling among fans I’ve spoken to is one of euphoric giddiness,” said Johnston.

“It’s been a long time coming - a lot of work has gone in up to now but there’s still a lot left to sort out as well.”

Johnston believes that the ground could provide FC with the platform to become a Football League club, and reckons a base of their own will complete the club.

“You’re only really half a club without your own home and this gives everyone involved with the club a focus going forward,” he said.

“To get towards the automatic promotion places in this league, you need a larger playing budget than we’ve got.

“But the ground gives us financial and timescale targets and will open up revenue streams, like match-day catering, that aren’t available at the moment.”

The fact that the ground is to be at Ten Acres Lane is also popular with FC fans, and Johnston is optimistic that the local community will welcome the move.

“There are so many connections and we’ve got roots there already,” he said.

“Hopefully, the community will see the benefits to having FC United based in their area.”

Meanwhile, title contenders Guiseley proved too strong for FC United as they eased to a 2-0 win at Nethermoor Park on Saturday.

The in-form Lions produced an efficient display in blustery conditions to condemn the Rebels to a fifth defeat in their last six games.

“The better team on the day won - they’re a strong side and we found it difficult to match their physicality,” said FC manager Karl Marginson.

Why do you bring fucking cricket up at every opportunity? And what do you mean by "we"?

You don't have to hate Leeds, and if you don't know the reasons why then you obviously will not do so.

''We'll build our ground at Ten Acres Lane
We'll lay the pitch by the old canal
We'll live the dream down in Newton Heath
We're gonna build our own ground
We're gonna build our own ground

This is our club belongs to you and me
We're United, United FC
We may never go up
But we'll never feel down
When we get our own ground
When we get our own ground''

was sang away against St Pauli, cracking chant as usual

A set-back

Statement from Manchester City Council:

As a result of the challenging local government settlement, the Council has to ensure that any available resources are optimised and deliver the very best for Manchester. The Council has therefore had to revisit its spending plans and examine other opportunities for securing a football facility within the city.

The Council acknowledges the immense amount of energy, time and effort that FC United and its members have invested in the Ten Acres Lane proposal to date and remain absolutely committed to helping FC United achieve its ambition of building a new ground in time for the 2012-13 season.
It shares the club’s vision for improving and developing football and sports provision and to that end, the Council is seeking to examine the most financially viable solution for a ground and community football facilities in the city, which makes the most use of Council resources. The City Council will carry out detailed feasibility work to enable a preferred option to be brought forward.

The Council and FC United have committed to producing a detailed report within the next month outlining the preferred option and the benefits to the local community. The Council will continue to work with FC United to raise investment for funding from the Football Foundation, Sport England and any other external funding partners, in order to secure a strong community offer in Manchester.

Both parties are aware of the commitment and support shown for the Ten Acres Lane proposal by many thousands of people, not least the residents of Newton Heath and FC United’s members and the partners are committed to bringing forward a proposal which will benefit both community football and the residents of Manchester, while making the most of available Council resources.

Regardless of the outcome of the report, the Council remains committed to Ten Acres Lane and continuing with maintaining the community use of this facility. The Club and the Council will reveal full details of the preferred option for the stadium and the plans for Ten Acres Lane by the end of March 2011.

Eddie Smith, Chief Executive of New East Manchester said: "We have to review these proposals in the light of the funding cuts necessitated by the government’s settlement. But we remain committed to working closely with the club to examine options for plans which both meet their ambitions and deliver the widest possible community benefits."
Response from FCUM:

In order that the Board can address any concerns that supporters may have, a members’ meeting has been arranged at the Longfield Suite in Prestwich tomorrow at 11am before our home game versus Mickleover Sports.

Directions for the Longfield Suite can be found here

However supporters should also note that the statement provides us with a number of commitments on behalf of Manchester City Council. It is these and other assurances that the Board have been working hard to secure in the last few days. It is our belief that as a result of negotiations some of those commitments are stronger than were even in place for Ten Acres Lane.

The emotional attachment we all felt to Ten Acres should not be underestimated. The Council appreciate that their decision means that the terms of the Community Share Scheme will need to be amended and a revised offer document issued. The club will send a separate communication next week to those members who have applied for Community Shares. We are satisfied that the Council have given the appropriate financial guarantees to ensure that the terms of the revised scheme will be at least equivalent to if not superior to those in the previous offer on Ten Acres Lane and that the proposed new site has the potential to deliver everything and more.

We ask supporters to remain patient and resilient in the coming days and weeks. There will be those within and outside our ranks that will question the future of this project. We stress, the Board remain fully committed to delivering a new home for FC United for the start of the 2012-13 season and no amount of setbacks will distract us from that pursuit.

Hasta La Victoria Siempre

No problem and thank you city
the same funding from the council will be there looks like a chance of even more funding from grants
a bigger plot of land of land to build on
ground to be built in same time scale
and one of the original sites that was looked at by the board before being shoehorned into ten acres

Overall looks like a blessing in disguise
