FC United V Galway Utd.!
My home town on the west coast of Ireland are travelling over to the Manchester area for some specialist pre-season training ( summer soccer in Ireland). They have arranged a friendly with FC United, towards end of Feb.
Galway Utd. play in div 1 ( the div. below Irish Prem. lge.). They are expected to mount a strong challenge for promotion to the premiership, this coming season. Tey also had the honour of competing in The UEFA cup & CWC (now defunct) on 3 occasions. I will be looking forward to seeing how this game goes ! I will not be attending, so any reports will be welcome ! |

It would be a long way to go for a friendly !
ps; Galway Utd's Commercial Manager, is none other than Nick Gleeson, the English man who infamously brought down the Bearings Bank in Japan a few years ago. He now lives in Galway, since returning from his porridge. I actually have met him, nice guy & really enjoys his present position with the club. He still does "corporate after-dinner speaking "........and his opening line is.." I'm the guy who wrote a cheque, and the Bank bounced " !

After the fuss about Leeson that some kicked up, I'm fairly sure it was announced that this game will be behind closed doors, so little chance of videos and stuff. There's bound to be a report on one or other of the sites though.
And it's an FC reserve game, so no easy comparison of relative strengths of the two clubs. But if they have got half the money that some Irish clubs have flowing around them, Galway should be stronger. |

It's a pity then, if it's only the reserves & behind closed doors.
In league of Ireland terms, there are 4 or 5 who are reasonably well off, the others are simply surviving on crumbs & local sponsorship. Galway Utd. belong to the "crumbs" brigade, albeit a very well run & structured club. |

Fair play, we are in the middle of our season. We can't play first team friendlies in the middle of it, albeit one with a tidy club like Galway. Even Glazer has had to spurn a bit of cash in the middle east becasue of a prior engagement.
