Got a FCUM shirt...at a mall in the US, no less

What a strange thing to be walking through a typical American shopping mall, and what do I spot, but a FCUM t-shirt! Right there along side Real Madrid and Inter Milan shirts. I was so excited, I bought it immediately. It's just not something I ever expected to see here in the US. I know it would be better to buy a shirt through the club itself so that they get the money, but with overseas shipping and the economy, it's not feasible.

It was at a little kiosk, where they sell all kinds of football (soccer) shirts. Most are knock offs. Apparently they're made in Peru or something. All the shirts are basically the same. They have the city name in block letters arching across the top (i.e., Madrid, Milan, etc.) and then a logo patch in the center of the shirt. The one I bought says "Manchester" across the top, but I recognized the FCUM logo the minute I saw it. I'm not crazy about having Manchester across the top as that does not specify a team. It's probably a safe bet that the shirt makers/sellers think it's a Manchester United shirt. There is such a strong South American influence in this area, that they typically don't know there are multiple teams in Manchester, and pay little attention to European football outside of a little bit of La Liga and Serie A.

Another thing that I liked about this kiosk is that they had Manchester United jerseys that were clearly also knock offs (no Nike, and likely no money in the Glazer's pocket). A nice little F-YOU to the Glazers, and practically in their back yard. In fact, these jerseys, while having the AIG logo, had the old "Manchester United Football Club" logo. That put a smile on my face, as I am still disgusted by the removal of "Football Club". After they did that (98, was it?), I haven't bought a single item of official Manchester United merchandise.

Anyway, it's not easy to actively support FCUM from over here, but I'm always wishing them well, lurking in this sub-forum, and really enjoy being able to keep up on their progress through this forum.

Any pics of it

Anyhow could be out of date next season

And easy enough to buy from the official web site if wanted

Quote:
Unlike most football clubs, FC United is wholly owned by its members and it is the members who decide on major issues such as whether the club needs a new kit.

At this year’s General Meeting to be held on Sunday the 29th March 2009, members will have the chance to vote on whether a supporters’ competition is to be held to design the new FC United home shirt.

It is now two years since our current red home shirt was introduced, so this is traditionally the time to review whether it should be replaced. At the same time, the contract for our kit supplier is due for renewal at the beginning of season 2009/10. Tenders have been requested and Tempest are not included in this process, therefore next season’s shirts will be made by a new supplier, irrespective of the design.

We have ensured all companies tendering will be prepared to make shirts to our own design, including to the current designs if required, but the Board strongly supports the idea of replacing the home shirt. Therefore, as before, we would like to give supporters the opportunity to design the club’s new home playing kit.

We are aware that members may vote against a design competition, but due to time constraints for the manufacturing process we are pressing ahead with the competition before the vote takes place.

The competition is open to supporters, of any age. A panel including manager Karl Marginson will decide on a shortlist of designs, which will be revealed at the General Meeting on Sunday 29th March 2009. If the members vote for a new design at the General Meeting, a further announcement will be made on the voting process.

The closing date for designs is 5.00pm, Tuesday 24th March 2009. A design template is available for download here. All designs should be sent into the club offices by post or by email:

By post:

FC United
Hope Mills
113 Pollard Street
Manchester
M4 7JA

Or by email:

office@fc-utd.co.uk

Good luck with your designs!

Any chance you could post pictures as Mick said.

Next season I'm hoping my design will be chosen...

Although I like your design would prefer mine as I would imagine that mine would be a bit more of a "seller" especially if they also made a slightly different version of a heavyweight cotton

Idealy would like to see something like mine as the home kit and maybe a different colour version of yours as the away kit

I bought mine directly from the online store, shipping was something like 5 pounds, it's the inaugural season in long sleeve, long out of stock now

Sorry, took me a couple of days to check back in. Pics are below. It's not an official shirt by any means, so I don't think it will be outdated, unless FCUM changes the badge. That's the only "official" thing about it. The interesting part about the badge is that it is very nicely embroidered, not just a picture downloaded and then turned into a screen printing. So they must have got the actual badge to sew on from somewhere (I guess someone in Peru could have created the badge from a picture, but seems like a lot of trouble.

I'd love to buy an official jersey from the online store someday, but may have to wait till the economy picks up, as it's a little pricey for a shirt when figuring in the exchange rate and overseas shipping.

Anyway, here are a couple of pictures of it (forgive the wrinkles, I had just worn it a few days ago and had to drag it out of the laundry for the pictures )

Thanks for posting the pictures. This is an insane story.

I might write it up as a story for the match programme or UTB fanzine (http://www.undertheboardwalk.net/) because everyone I've told the story to has been both amused and fascinated.

All I am saying is your design could be replicated by buying a red t-shirt and having the badge stuck on it. Infact, they had red shirts with white trim exactly the same at Topman not so long ago.

Not much of a design, sorry.

Does anyone know when the new home shirt will be announced? I want to buy one, but would rather wait 'til the new one comes out.

Planning on making it to a few matches this season after completely failing to last year...

Already announced the winner the one with the stripes down the front a slightly amended version of this one

It will be made by a different manufacturer as well as the deal with Tempest has had the plug pulled/not renewed contract due to problems getting stock from them I believe

Think it would look better short sleeved, with a v-neck and with the white vertical band a bit thinner.

Yeah, and (as mickthered said) without the white piping. Still not an awful shirt though.
Do you know who got the shirt making contract in the end?
