Roca & Wilson Speak

“From training and chatting with the rest of the lads you can say that we’re not here to make the numbers up in the league next season. We’re aiming for the play-offs if not even higher.” It’s clear from the off that FC United new boy Kyle Wilson (red shirt) means business.

And his fellow summer recruit Carlos Roca (blue shirt) is just as determined: “I’m ambitious and I know the rest of the squad are; we want to be challenging. There’s a lot of momentum at the club, they’ve had three previous promotions so they’re doing something right.”

Both players have commented how easy it’s been to fit into the squad and how excited they are about being part of FC United. Carlos, who was released by Blue Square Premier side Altrincham at the end of last season, explained why he turned down offers from other clubs.

He said: “There are quite a few reasons but one of the main one is Karl Marginson. I spoke to him a few times over last season about joining, he makes you feel wanted. It didn’t work out at the time but it has now.”

After an unsettled and sometimes frustrating season at Northwich Victoria, Stalybridge Celtic as well as The Robins, the 23-year-old attacking midfielder seems eager to find a club he can call his own.

He added: “If everything that Karl has been saying is true - about the club, the support and the way they play - then it’s definitely the club for me. It’s really important for me to be enjoying playing football again. When considering my offers the money wasn’t important, it was about finding a good club that I’ll be happy at and one I can get back to my best at.”

And Carlos at his best is an exciting prospect if his footballing CV is anything to go by. ‘Rocky’, as he’s known, started out at Manchester City aged nine, before moving on to Bolton Wanderers when he was 14-years-old and then Oldham Athletic when he was 16.

The only downside is that upbringing has made him a City fan, although when questioned about it he protests, like most footballers, that his priorities are playing rather than supporting. Somewhat surprisingly, Birkenhead born Kyle doesn’t support one of Manchester United’s rivals.

He explains: “I’m a Man United fan, my dad used to be a season ticket holder for years, and that’s one of the reasons why I wanted to join FC. I took a lot of stick for it when I was growing up but it’s been worth it.”

Having played against FC United twice last season for Skelmersdale United, 22-year-old Kyle has a good idea of what the club is all about. “The fans are really passionate; they must be if they’re prepared to stop watching Manchester United to watch non-league football instead.”

Like Carlos, Kyle has a good footballing pedigree having come through the youth ranks at Crewe Alexandra whilst being capped 15 times for England under-19s alongside Scott Carson, Anton Ferdinand and Lee Croft.

Both players admit that Margy and his backroom have been working them ‘very hard’ in training but they’re now raring to make their debuts and get playing again. Carlos added: “I think FC United is brilliant for non-league football, it’s proper football and there’s a real buzz around the whole club. I want to be part of that buzz.”

A shame that Roca left us (alty) he showed some flashes of brilliance (in context with non league football of course ). He was more of an impact player that came off the bench, he just didn't get enough opportunities, reckon he could be good for FC and good luck to him.
