A scousers veiw to FC...
Now I hate anything to do with Manchester United as much as the next bin dipping, ambulance rocking Scouser (no, I really do) but a few weeks ago along with a couple of mates of mine (also into a bit of football culture) we made the short trip over to the dark side to take in Bury vs FC United.
Two quid in on the gate (we weren't lining their pockets even more by paying full whack (7 quid btw) Wink) and we took our vantage point in the Bury end for a bit of football voyeurism. We got in there about 45 min before kick off and it seemed that old football terracing protocol was well in place. Start in the middle and spread out. Few hundred already in the stand, hundreds more gradually flowing in. Everyone standing. About 15 min before kick off the first shout of "yer-nited" went up in that unmistakable Mancunian drone. And well that was the start of non-stop singing for the entire game. Loads of old United songs in there but also loads of new ones having a go at this new-age football we (stil) watch, and put up with, week in week out; "no knobheads in jester hats", "no sky tv", "Rio Ferdinand" etc.... Even one having a swipe at Ferguson. And I doff my proverbial Low Alpine hat to any set of fans who come up with a terrace song to the Sex Pistols - Anarchy in the UK. The Bury fans could only muster up "eas-eh, eas-eh", and the ever-strong "you're not singing anymore". The irony wasn't lost on us nor the Mancs. The FC fans only got louder when they went behind. They seem to have taken everything wrong with football and well, made it right. Whether or not it's sustainable in the long run I don't know. But I'm sure the 1,500 or so there that night in the away end think it is. Loads of kids there as well, all waving bar scarfs. In fact it was the first time in ages I saw a football crowd and it actually looked like they were having a good time. Would I swap my season ticket on the Kop to stand on a terrace on some small town outside Blackburn next week? Would I swap my ticket for Sheff Utd away on the first day of the season to see the old original Sheffield team? Would I swap the first Euro away of the season for Blackpool Mechanics in the cup? Probably not. Well not, just yet. (Wink) I'll tell yer though, as much as we hate them, as much as I hate them, they're onto a winner these lads. Taken from the FC site |

And I actually can understand why. The lad I know has been a ST holder since he could speak, a true blue. But he says he is so fed up with the shit atmosphere at COM stadium, he sometimes, just sometimes, prefers FCUM. You might be in the same boat, I know that I sometimes get fed up with OT. |

If they cause trouble, they'll get a slap, be out on their arses, and we keep their money. Fair to me. |

I went to the last home game - over 6,000 in Gigg Lane and a few lads that I know still have season tickets at OT. I also went to the very last game of the season at Boundary Park. Only just short of 2000 there, but the singing was fantastic - I am Mancunion for the last 10-15 minutes non-stop. Then my 6-year-old lad burst into "And number one was Georgie Best" on the way home. Bless. Brought a tear to my eye. |
