socialism!

Today's story-

" FC United of Manchester will ask supporters to decide how much to pay for their own season ticket this summer based on what they can afford.

The decision has been taken by the club's elected board in recognition of the current recession and to maintain their policy of providing affordable football.

But the club hopes supporters who are not feeling the pinch as much will be able to donate more.

Board member Jules Spencer said: "We believe we're the first football club to ask each supporter to choose what they pay for their own season ticket.

"FC United like all clubs need to raise revenue and we will feel the pinch in the coming months just as any other club will in this economic climate. But given our philosophy of providing affordable football, we do not feel unilateral price increases are the way forward.

"So we hope the Your Season Ticket, Your Choice campaign will do two things. First, it will offer a lower season ticket price for those supporters who cannot now afford last year's price, which was around £140.

"Secondly, it means those supporters who can afford a bit more can choose to donate as much as they wish to help fund the club's operating costs.

"It is an ambitious campaign but we have raised similar amounts of money in the past so we hope we can do so again.

"This is about empowerment, of collective responsibility, of us all pulling together to ensure the club's future in a way that reflects our founding principles."

"We have been asked if we're being foolhardy but why shouldn't a football club trust its own supporters? FC United is after all a member owned club, so everyone has a vested interest in making this a success"

Season Tickets for under 18's will remain at the equivalent of £1 per game."

As I said in another thread if big United didn't have to service sixhundredandsixtysixmillionpounds @14% then they make so much money from outside sources that they could let the fans in for free!
but as the red bearded dwarf says - " go fuck yourself you losers"!!!!

Ok United might not depend on ticket income (and lets not be silly, they'd still be putting ticket prices up regardless of the debt even if we were still a PLC), but other clubs certainly do up and down the divisions. They couldn't possibly survive on this kind of structure... and I wouldn't have thought FCUM can long term either. I think it's a bit of a silly gimmick to be honest

Brad- Nobody expects to get in for free and obviously FC couldn't make it by being this generous and you're right it's a just a gesture or a publicity stunt.
But who knows- one day the match receipts for Big United may be an insignificant percentage of the total earnings!

The board are recognising that money is tight for a lot of people at the moment and maybe some cant afford the price of a ST Yet if you read the FC forum in the last few weeks the majority of the fans wanted the prices to go up
This way those fans will be able to pay more for the ST if they want to whilst keeping the prices down for the ones that cant afford as much

Sounds like a good idea for a club like FC but irrelevant to top flight teams.

The bottom line is if you don't like the cost of top flight football, and I san see why you wouldn't because it is fecking expensive, then watching FC is a good option for you.

I watch up to 6 games per weekend at my local club and I enjoy it a greeat deal. Not like watching United mind.

Hi Mick - where the hell have you been ? I´ve missed you and Fred on the United forum - life is a tad boring there without you two

That decision is really inspiring. FCUM have a similar structure as some Spanish clubs, which can only be good in the long term. I see no reason why they can't make it to the Premiership and survive there.

You only have to look at other teams overspending on players and wages just to try and earn more money
Problem is only so many of the teams can make it and if they do then the players expect more money
If they don't make then they are stuck with players on high wages
Its got to the ridiculous situation now where teams at the same level as FC are trying the same method and even teams to - three leagues below are at it
FC have got a wage structure and will stick to it if the players get us promoted then so be it if they don't then no problem

There's a big difference between putting prices up by one or two quid a season and putting ticket prices up by 60% in three seasons and forcing fans to buy home cup tickets. The PLC's record on ticket price rises can be judged over 15 years, unfortunately we only needed 3 seasons to judge Uncle Malc's.

One week's wages for Gareth Barry.

The top flight truly is out of touch with reality.

The difference is that as a PLC the ticket prices at United was always in the bottom half of the prices when compared to the rest of the league

Under glazer they are now at the top of the scale

Agreed, they'd have gone up during this period, and I think it's reasonable to assume they'd have gone up by a much greater rate than previously given how the game has gone. But not near the 60% levels the Glazers have implemented

Let's not forget some people were still priced out under the PLC though, it wasn't all rosiness, and they still treated the clubs fans as customers. Just seems much better compared to what we have now!

£119000 so far and over a 1000 STs sold

And still the people to go who pay for one at the start of the season looking as though the target will be well beaten

I don't get an ST for fc because I have one for united, and I can't always get to the matches, but I hope to get to a fair few this season

Is there anyway to watch these games live online?

I'm in Canada, so showing up for a match would be difficult.

But it'd be nice to cheer on a 'United' team composed of players who aren't millionaire superstars playing against players who aren't millionaire superstars.

Not to my knowledge there is no way of watching on line

You can get live radio coverage of almost all games here though
there are also usually highlights on FCUM TV but the site seems to be down at the moment

FCUM Radio Link
May I suggest that you join the FC forum where you can get more up to date info of the games usually during games the armchair army are on and provide updates

Listening to the FCUM radio is great, they're very funny guys (even if they do spend more time talking crap instead of commentating)
