St Helens 0 FC United 2

Excellent win for the boys today...

Bolton fans at the other end put up BWFC England flag and start doing aeroplanes.

Flag confiscated soon afterwards...

Very noisy United crowd.

Good day out.

New striker Rudd got on the scoresheet too.

All you need is Rudd.

Here's the match report...

OPENING DAY SUCCESS FOR REDS AT KNOWSLEY ROAD
====================================

ST. HELENS TOWN F.C. 0 F.C. UNITED of MANCHESTER 2 (Goalscorers: Simon Carden 77 mins + Stuart Rudd 86 mins).

(played at Knowsley Road, St. Helens on Saturday 12th August 2006, Kick-off 3 p.m.)

Newly promoted F.C. United of Manchester kicked-off the new league season in the North West Counties First Division with maximum points following this 2-0 away win at Knowsley Road against St. Helens Town F.C.

But Town, who finished eighth in the First Division last season, made F.C. United fight all the way with a solid rearguard defence, and it wasn’t until the final quarter of an hour that the visitors scored the goals that the travelling support demanded.

That wasn’t to say that F.C. United didn’t have plenty of chances in the first-half as they peppered the St. Helens Town goal with shot after shot; Stuart Rudd coming closest with a 10th minute pile-driver which hit the crossbar with the home ‘keeper stranded.

And in the 26th minute, Rudd set up a great chance for No. 3 Alex Mortimer whose looping effort was expertly tipped over the bar by home ‘keeper Ray Clifton.

But the biggest cheer of the half was when the Bolton Wanderers F.C. flag, which was being prominently displayed at the pavilion end, was unceremoniously “removed”.

Half time: St. Helens Town F.C. 0 F.C. United of Manchester 0

As the second half progressed in a similar fashion to the first half, St. Helens Town were increasingly pressed back in their own half, as F.C. United of Manchester looked to score the opener.

The best chance seemed to have been a scorching 25 yard free-kick in the 69th minute from Rory Patterson that was saved at the second attempt by the home ‘keeper.

But just when it looked as if a goal might never come, the hard-working Stuart Rudd dispossessed a home defender on the edge of the penalty area on 77 minutes, and SIMON CARDEN ghosted through the home defence to stroke the ball home from twelve yards out, to send the travelling support into raptures of delight.

And in the 86th minute, the F.C. United No. 9 deservedly got his own name on the score-sheet with goal number two. A William Ahern shot hit the foot of the post only to rebound clear and when the loose ball was played back into the goal area from the right hand side, STUART RUDD was on-hand to steer the ball home from close range, as the ball trickled into the goal, in off the very same post that Ahern had just struck seconds earlier.

Final score: St. Helens Town F.C. 0 F.C. United of Manchester 2

Me too.....

Perhaps he wants to find a reason to shut the FCUM forum and see all the anti United stuff that goes on at FCUM for himself, like the ritual burning of Fergies effigy and the anti United songs, which will give him the excuse he needs.
