The final academy game

Manchester United U18s 0 Sunderland U18s 1

Sunderland Under-18s were crowned champions of their group after a dramatic last-day win at Manchester United.

The Black Cats beat United, finalists in this year's FA Youth Cup, thanks to a penalty from Jack Colback.

Sunderland were awarded the penalty after Jordan Henderson was brought down in the box at the end of a good move.

That coupled with Nottingham Forest's failure to beat bottom club Huddersfield means Sunderland top Group D and go into the national play-offs.

The winners of the four FA Premier Academy League groups go into the play-off semi-finals.

Sunderland play Manchester City, the winners of Group C, next Saturday while Arsenal (Group A) and Leicester City (Group B) go head-to-head in the other semi-final.

Coach Kevin Ball missed the game after undergoing a back operation last week but he will be back to steer them into the play-offs.

Chris Backhouse was their goalkeeper. He did well, his father, stevie b., must be proud. United had a lot of changes.
Both Backhouse and Daniels have done well since leaving us, but we released them and signed Zieler.

Sunderland U18 finished top of Group D, Chris Backhouse must have enjoyed a good season.

Which club does Luke Daniels play for this season?
