Jonathan Forbes on trial

United have signed 17-year old Jon Forbes from Unibond Premier League club Kendal Town on a six-week trial. Forbes joined United in mid-November after featuring in twelve first team games for Kendal Town so far this season. A central defender, Forbes can also play at right back. He broke into the Kendal team in early September and attracted attention from a host of league clubs after two 'Man of the Match' displays in the heart of the Kendal defence.

This report from a local newspaper...

"KENDAL Town defender Jon Forbes signed a contract with the club on Tuesday evening and it was revealed this week that he probably will be heading to Manchester United to take up an offer of a six weeks' trial.

For the Premiership giants to take an interest in the 17-year-old college student from the Preston area speaks volumes about the potential that he has shown for Town since his arrival shortly after the start of the season.

Manager Tony Hesketh said: "He has massive potential and it looks as if he will be bound for Manchester United, although there have also been approaches from Liverpool and a bundle of other professional clubs.

That will mean we will lose his services for that period, and if that ultimately means going to Manchester United and we don't see him again, then that's great for his career.

"The fact that he has not been attached to a Football League club so far means his general game is fairly rusty in terms of positional sense, but he has blistering pace and a fantastic tackling technique and is an extremely good passer of the ball.

"His best position in my opinion is full back and anyone who has seen him play recently would agree that he is an outstanding talent."

This follows the capture of Michael Barnes from Lancaster City last term. It looks as though there are some untapped young players in these leagues.

Forbes was an unused substitute in United's Under 18 2-3 defeat to Crewe Alexandra yesterday.

Tony, you mentioned that we had a young player from Rushden & Diamonds on trial with us a couple of weeks ago. Apparently he's now gone to Chelsea on trial - not sure how trustworthy the link is though!

That's the lad......he only played half a game against Wolves a few weeks ago and looked very weak......really out of his depth. Perhaps it was nerves but I wasn't impressed........

And now Forbes is on trial at Liverpool, along with Lauri and Astrit. Two great prospects. Lauri where compared to Walcott by Malcolm Elias (the man who first spotted Walcott).

Liverpool is also leading the race for Giles Barnes and James McCarthy. A bit provoking actually.

Looks like McCarthy is heading to Liverpool. He where on trial at Liverpool and impressed Benitez. Liverpool are eager to start negotiating with him.

Man Utd is still keen on him, and is said to be the only contender to Liverpool, eventhough there is several english, spanish and italian clubs who are eager to sign him.

From Skysports.com:

Quote:
Hamilton have confirmed Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers, Barcelona, Deportivo La Coruna and the Premiership rivals are all in the hunt, although no official bids have yet been made, ahead of the January transfer window.

"He's a player with an awful lot of potential," Hamilton club secretary Scott Struthers told skysports.com exclusively.

"There's an awful lot of genuine interest and realistically I would say there's a fair chance that a club will move in January.

Sounds like he's a pretty good prospect, especially if he's attracting interest from the likes of us and Barcelona.
