And the Butterstile CP School pupil knows what it's like to take home top earnings after his grandad agreed to give him a pound for every goal he scored. Proud mum Julie (31), of Halliwell Walk, Prestwich, said: "It has been a bit of a joke with Matthew's grandad Joe. He said he has had to take out a loan! Matthew scored 11 goals in one game!" Matthew's striking performance on the pitch has prompted interest from a number of clubs, including Blackburn Rovers and the Reds, who have invited him for trials next week, and the youngster currently trains with the Manchester City youth academy after he was spotted by scouts playing for the Warriors. Although Matthew's dad Christian (27) is manager and coach for the Warriors under-eights, Julie said her son became hooked on football as soon as he could walk. She said: "Matthew's first word was 'ball' not 'mummy' and he has broken countless ornaments in the house with his football. He is amazing though, his feet are like magnets with that ball!" Although the Boland family are keeping their options open about Matthew's future, he knows exactly what he wants to do. Julie said: "He is still very young. But as soon as Matthew knew United had been in touch he said 'Alex Ferguson has found me.' He just wants to play with the big boys. It is his dream." |

In May, a quartet of eight year olds were signed up to Manchester United's football academy at the same time as two other players moved to Manchester City and Bolton Wanderers. Coach Dave Horrocks put the secret of the youngsters' success down to the attitude that he instills into the team, who train at Merseybank. He said: "It's not winning at all costs, we're more concerned about the development of the kids themselves than the team. "Every time we play they are going out there to have some fun." At the end of last season the seven-a-side squad had to be disbanded after every one of the players was snapped up - three to United and four to City. Now four young stars of the under eight's team have glittering futures to look forward to as Tico Gavi-Mihedji, Luke Edwards and Thomas Ingham, all from Chorlton, along with team mate Tyler Blackett, have all just signed up to Manchester United. The boys of The Manchester Grammar School have beaten the city's two Premier League clubs to the punch by winning the Independent Schools' Football Association's under-15 National Cup. And they did it with a 3–2 victory over the Latymer School, from Hammersmith, London, at Burton Albion's Pirelli Stadium. Sam Cantor struck the MGS winner in the closing minutes of extra-time to bring the trophy north. Lewis Bertenshaw had opened the scoring for MGS before Latymer scored two goals in quick succession to nose in front. Dan Brown forced extra-time with a curling free kick, before Cantor sealed the win. The 14-year-old grandson of Ralph Bullock, the founder of the Cheadle bus company, is in the Manchester Grammar School’s senior first 11 for both football and cricket, but knows he will have to steer in one direction soon. "I love both my sports so much, but I know I will have to decide soon," said Elliot. "But hopefully that can wait for another two years when I have a little bit more experience." Elliot’s list of sporting credits is already lengthy. As well as playing at MGS first- team level - even though he is four years younger than his team-mates - Elliot is an under-14 Lancashire county cricketer, one of the youngest players ever to represent Cheadle Cricket Club’s first XI, and is on trial at the nationally renowned youth development Football Academy at Crewe Alexandra, which is overseen by long-serving manager Dario Gradi.
