New Academy intake

Manchester United Official Web Site - Manchester United first year scholars

Quote:

Reds draft in scholars
United have released the list of first-year academy scholars for next season with the youngsters forming part of the Academy squad.

Paul McGuinness will look to repeat last term's FA Youth Cup triumph with the new intake being joined by second-years Joe Coll, Liam Jacob, Tyler Blackett, Luke McCullough, Charni Ekangamene, Luke Hendrie, Tom Lawrence and Gyliano van Velzen.

First-year scholars: Jonny Sutherland; Declan Dalley, Donald Love, Louis Rowley, Gary Wilkinson; James Weir, Jack Rudge, Ben Pearson, Joe Rothwell, Kenji Gorre, Patrick McNair, Mats Daehli, Liam Grimshaw, Jack Barmby; Sam Byrne.
Few players I don't recognise I think Liam Grimshaw was in that original Milk cup squad that turned out to be false, United got him from Burnley or something. Rowley I know nothing about but he was in the Premier cup squad last year and Sam Byrne I've never heard of. Can anyone provide any info on any of these players?

Also Adnan Januzaj and the Fiorentina 'keeper (Gollini?) aren't included. I wonder if they have recieved clearence to play yet. Looking forward to seeing Janzuaj in action.

Cheers for that, 15 first year scholars and then the 2 new signings is a huge amount of new faces to the academy. Really looking forward to seeing some of them in action.

They lost 4-0 to Spurs in a round robin with Chelsea and Arsenal at Carrington today. Think Arsenal beat Chelsea 4-3 or 5-4.

I am very excited about the prospects of Jack Barmby. Watched the Milk Cup highlights again last night and he has superb ability on the ball and a beautiful left foot.

Does not mean he will make it, but my inner youth-muppett can at least get excited.

Joe Coll (GK), Liam Jacob (GK), Tyler Blackett (LB/CB), Luke McCullough (CB), Charni Ekangamene (LB/MID), Luke Hendrie (RB/MID), Tom Lawrence (LM/RM/STR) and Gyliano van Velzen (LW/STR).

First-year scholars: Jonny Sutherland (GK); Declan Dalley (CB), Donald Love (FB), Louis Rowley (LB/LM?), Matty Wilkinson (CB); James Weir, Jack Rudge (MID), Ben Pearson (MID), Joe Rothwell (MID), Kenji Gorre (LM/RM), Patrick McNair (MID), Mats Daehli (MID), Liam Grimshaw, Jack Barmby (LM/RM); Sam Byrne (STR).

There's a few I'm not sure about. Basically we're stacked in midfield this year.

Our full backs seem to be struggling with their fitness at the moment, Lingard and Cole have both played right back for the reserves lately!

We're a bit light on strikers again, aren't we?

That was a bit of a problem over the last few months of last season.

I imagine they will play a 4-5-1/4-3-3. Byrne is a specialist striker, then there is Van Velzen, Lawrence and Barmby who can all play as a striker. Wilson can also play there if included.

Really like from what i've seen so far of Rothwell and Daehli. Very technically gifted and mature in possession. McNair came with a very big reputation in NI but havn't seen enough of him yet.

Agreed, I always expected Daelhi to have something a bit special about him but from the Milk Cup I was very impressed with Rothwell as well. Rudge seem a talented player as well as does Pearson, really looking forward to seeing more of some of these players, possibly the most technically gifted batch in a long time?
