Reserves - Blackburn (A)

Tough game tonight for the title-chasing second string.

Blackburn have named the following squad: Brown, Kean, Ramm, Morris, Lowe, Hanley, Jones, Reid, Hoilett, Potts, Basturk, Linganzi, Dunn, Di Santo, Rigters, Blackman, Banton, Santa Cruz.

Seems to be a mix of fringe first-teamers - David Dunn, Franco Di Santo, Yildiray Basturk, Jason Brown, Steven Reid, Junior Hoilett - and their stronger academy players - Banton, Potts etc. Not easy at all.

No United team news yet, no academy game at the weekend though so some of the U18 lads will probably come into contention.

Thats Santa Cruz little bro I believe. Doubt Dunn will start, might get 20mins at some stage and Hoilett started at the weekend.

Any word on Uniteds squad? Hoping Robbie Brady might be included....

will be interesting to see who starts up front. Diouf may be left out having played (albeit for a short time) last night. I wonder if there will be any hints to the carling cup side - though with 4 days between this game and the cup final it wouldn't be clear.

Anyone know if Kiko is around (or indeed still a United player) and available for tonight? I reckon Josh King could be involved.

No, it will be played at a later date because of their cup game.

Why would he not still be a United player? He's been injured.

I dunno - just haven't seen him in ages. Thought he might have been 'future endeavored"

What is he injured with this time? Remember him making a reserve team come back what seems like an age ago, and then heard nothing since.

Yeah, he made a brief comeback for the last 10 mins of a Reserve match a month or so ago but must have had a setback because he's been injured since. Real shame, hope that he's back very soon.

We should find out the team news for tonight shortly too.

anyone know of any browser based streams for this (clutching at straws i know!!)

With regards to the line up, where is Eikrem these days? Is he injured? was playing some brilliant stuff before christmas, and I was surprised he didn't see some more first team action in the Carling Cup or lesser cared about CL games.

I think Eikrem has a back problem, Dudgeon has been missing for a while as well.

That Blackburn lineup could well be a first-choice midfield and attack with a few injuries to the first-team!

Great strike by Norwood, off the crossbar.

The good thing about that is it actually makes it a meaningful match as you are playing against players who are regulars at the level you aspire to. Looks like a good crowd as well.

Lively start to the game too, Di Santo should have buried a header from a Lowe cross, then Diouf narrowly fails to connect to a Obertan cross after a lightning counterattack launched by Possebon, then Norwood hits the crossbar with a dipping effort from outside the box.

Possebon has started extremely well.

1-0 Blackburn, Hoilett with a free header from a corner, Amos nearly did enough to stop it but it just rolled in.

Diouf forces a good save from Brown. United have been struggling to impose themselves since the Blackburn goal, Hoilett is proving a real handful.

Dunn forces an excellent save from Amos after waltzing past Evans and Brown.

(you'll have to rely on someone else for the updates soon as I've got 5 a side at 8!)

Yep thats the one, came on as a sub for their 1st team at the weekend.

Norwood lucky to be on the pitch after a shocking tackle. Out of character but should have been a red.

1-1 Full time. Good result considering the opposition. Top of the table although Liverpool have 3 matches in hand.

It was an enjoyable watch this one. The gap in experience was showing here with the Blackburn side they had a strong line up (with the likes of Dunn, Reid and Basturk), so it was interesting to see how the lads would fair against them.

I thought they did well, quite clearly frustrated from a well organized Blackburn back four and midfield but kept possession well at times and tried to keep probing looking for an opening. Blackburn defended well throughout though and did well to nullify a lot of potential breaks. Hoilett and Lowe going forward impressed for me.

We only managed to penetrate their defence on the odd occasion, Diouf dragged a shot uncharacteristically wide after latching onto a through ball (although he would have done well to score from that distance) and Keane was unlucky to see his glanced effort from a Norwood cross hit the post. De Laet's goal was a well taken volley around the body of a Blackburn defender from a cross from Diouf.

Norwood incidentally, should have been off with a high studs first challenge on Reid who reacted with a shove and both received yellow. Norwood pushed him further when he hit a quick free kick directly into Reid's face, a controlled hands on hip reaction that time.

A good game all round, Diouf showed again his great aerial ability, good acceleration and excellent dentures and I thought Gill did well playing at left back. In fact the defense deserves a lot of credit given the experience Blackburn had upfront, apart from the goal and a save pushed onto the post, I can't recall Amos being tested on too many further occasions.

On a side note, I may be being a bit harsh here, but exactly what did Blackburn see in Di Santo when they took him on loan from Chelsea? Anybody rate him? He's just looked incredibly dry whenever I've seen him.

Looked like Diouf lost his player for the Blackburn goal but, made up for it by chasing down the ball and getting the assist.
