Reserves vs Northwich

As far as I can tell we won 3-2 after being 2-0 down, with goals from one of the da Silva twins, Tom Cleverley and Danny Drinkwater. That's just going from a thread on a Northwich forum though, could easily be wrong.

Interesting, someone on the Northwich forum saying Michael Barnes started for the Vics and has signed.

Quite a collection of ex-Reds they're building up if that's true (Jamie Mullan and Aaron Burns are there too)

From the Manchester Evening News:

United Reserves 3 Northwich Vics 2

OLE Gunnar Solskjaer’s immunity from defeat since taking over as United’s reserve team boss was given a serious examination by the Blue Square Conference Premier side

But his young side eventually battled back from two goals down to keep his five-match unbeaten record intact.

Vics found themselves in the bizarre position of playing an away match on their own ground – Marston’s Arena is also United reserves’ home patch – but that didn’t deter them from racing into a two-goal lead.

Michael Barnes, one of four former United youngsters in the Vics squad, the others being Phil Marsh, Jamie Mullan and Aaron Burns, did well down the left, in the 27th minute, to give Joel Byrom the chance to put the ‘visitors’ in front.

Byrom, extended Vics lead, six minutes before the break, with a terrific shot which flew into the top corner of Ben Amos’s goal.

Brazilian youngster Fabio Da Silva put United back in the game on the stroke of half-time with a smart finish after bursting through the Vics’ defence.

Vics’ boss Dino Maamria made wholesale changes to his side for the second half which saw United battle their way to claim a highly creditable victory.

Tom Cleverley exchanged passes with Danny Drinkwater before putting United level in the 65th minute and then, six minutes later, Drinkwater struck to give United the lead.

UNITED: Amos, Derbyshire (Gray 61), F Da Silva (Cathcart 61), Eckersley, Chester, C Evans (James 61), Eikrem (Cleverley 61), Drinkwater, Macheda (Norwood 76), Hewson, Brandao (Stewart 46).
Substitute not used: Zieler.

United staged a spirited second half comeback against Northwich Victoria at the Marstons Stadium this evening.

Apparently it was a United home game but the entrance fee was a tenner....a bit rich to watch a reserve game at home!

Nevertheless, the game attracted a fair share of locals and reserve team regulars as well. It was interesting just watching the warm up as ex-Reds Jamie Mullan and Aaron Burns were obviously familiar faces, so it was with a tinge of surprise to see Michael Barnes and Phil Marsh also turning out as trialists.

The first ten minutes were relative even although Mullan and Barnes were creating chances down the wings. While Da Silva was given a good test against the tricky Mullan, Jimmy Derbyshire was having a sterner challenge against the pacy Barnes. And it was down the left wing that Barnes used his pace to beat Derbyshire and send a cross into the box that a Vic's forward smashed past Ben Amos.

Our midfield of Eikrem, Hewson, Evans and Drinkwater were getting overrun and it was no surprise when Vic's made it 2-0 when one of their players hit a screamer that gave Amos no chance. In fact if he got in the way he would have ended up in the back of the net with the ball. United were playing really poorly and hardly put a pass together.

Then on the stoke of half time, Fabio Da Silva scored a great solo goal. First lobbing the ball over the Vic's defence, he burst through a number of players, showing exceptional strength, and then volleyed past the keeper.

This kid is class!

Half time: Manchester United 1 Northwich Victoria 2

Cameron Stewart replaced Brandao at half time but it was not until Ole made 4 substitutions just after the hour mark that the reds finally got their act together. Cleverley, Cathcart, Gray and James all came on and four minutes later Tom Cleverley notched the equaliser with a good strike after good build up work from Drinkwater and James.

United were now on top, and the new midfield of James, Cleverley , Hewson and Drinkwater started to click. On 71 minutes Drinkwater scored United's third and the winner after some good team play, when he took a great through ball from Matty James around the keeper and crashed it into the net.

United could have scored one or two additional goals but that would have been unfair to NV who perhaps deserved a draw, particularly after their first half display.

In the latter stages, the Vic's staged a mini comeback but our defence looked solid.

Final Score: Manchester United 3 Northwich Victoria 2

The gate was not announced but it looked about 300-400.

The United team:

1. Amos
2. Derbyshire
3. F. Da Silva
4. Eckersley
5. Chester
6. Evans
7. Eikrem
8. Drinkwater
9. Macheda
10. Hewson
11. Brandao

12. Gray (2) 61 min
13. Zieler
14. James (6) 61 min
15. Stewart (11) HT
16. Cathcart (3) 61 min
17. Norwood (9) 76 min
18. Cleverley (7) 61 min

Goals: F. Da Silva (46), Cleverley (65), Drinkwater (71)

Scott Moffatt has a serious knee injury (cruciate?) and will be out for quite some time.
Cheers. Anything on Antonio Bryan?

We must be a bit short of defenders in the Academy with Moffatt out injured?

Strickland, Dudgeon, Gill, Brown, Stewart, possibly Wootton, James can cover - it's not too bad. Bringing in those two French defenders that were heavily linked probably wouldn't go amiss though.
