Someone is taking the piss with Wiki again. Brentford!

Question on a previous post about him being assigned a squad number - this would only be possible if he has a Euro passport, correct?

Possebon given squad number

Sir Alex Ferguson has handed United's number 34 shirt to Brazilian youngster Rodrigo Possebon.

The 18-year-old midfielder, who completed a transfer from Sport Club Internacional last month, is expected to keep learning his trade in United's Reserves, but will now be eligible for senior duty if required.

The primarily right-footed youngster, who turns 19 next week, is a tall, athletic holding midfielder. He takes over the squad number vacated by Ryan Shawcross following his transfer to Stoke City.

Possebon has joined Anderson as the second Brazilian in United's squad but, while his compatriot has been a sensation in his first season at Old Trafford, the Reds' wealth of midfield talent will make it difficult for Possebon to make a senior impression this season.
Brilliant news.Wonder if heŽll feature in the reserve game tomorrow.

Yes, he doesnŽt meet the criteria for work permit.

I would think so.
Otherwise he wouldnŽt get a number, if he isnŽt ready for action.

Well, he got a squad number because he is in our Champions League squad which they had just delivered to UEFA.

Choccy likes him so he must be good

United have high hopes for new signing Rodrigo Possebon, according to the club's Academy manager and Reserves boss Brian McClair.

The midfielder, who turns 19 next week, joined the Reds last month from Porto Alegre-based Sport Club Internacional. He has since been handed the No. 34 shirt, but is likely to spend the remainder of the campaign plying his trade with the Reserves.

He is the club's second Brazilian signing folllowing the acquisiton of Anderson from FC Porto last summer. And McClair believes Possebon has a bright future ahead of him.

"Rodrigo is a tall, elegant midfielder who fits into the idea of a modern footballer," he told the Manchester Evening News. "He has very good ability and is a box-to-box player rather than your silky tricky midfielder. He's very steady.

"Our scout in Brazil John Calvert-Toulmin, who recommended our Brazilian full-back twins Fabio and Rafael Silva, spotted Rodrigo and we've been impressed.

"His father is of Italian descent and so Rodrigo had an Italian passport. Because of that he is effectively European so all the paper work was sorted out easily.

"Rodrigo also speaks very good English which has helped him. That makes a big difference.

"He is young and has come a long way from his home to England but he has settled in very well. He's very level headed and we are pleased to have him."

Playing for reserves tonight:

Brian McClair and Jim Ryan have included Brazilian midfielder Rodrigo Possebon in the Reserves' squad for Thursday's Manchester Senior Cup clash with Manchester City.

The 18-year-old could make his first appearance for United since joining from Internacional last month, as the Reds look to register a fourth straight victory in this season's competition.

Possebon joins a strong midfield in the 16-man squad, alongside Chris Eagles, Corry Evans, Michael Barnes, Sam Hewson and Tom Cleverley.

United will look to exact some revenge for this week's U18 mauling by City, in which the Blues posted a 5-0 FA Premier Academy League victory at The Cliff.

The Reds also have the added motivation of avenging their defeat by City in last season's Senior Cup final, where the Blues ran out 3-1 winners at Old Trafford.

Thursday's match kicks off at 7pm.

United: Heaton, Zieler; Gray, Lea, Eckersley, Chester, Galbraith; Hewson, Barnes, Cleverley, Eagles, C Evans, Possebon; Welbeck, S Evans, Bryan.

He came on for the last 35 minutes and looked tidy without doing anything spectacular. He likes to pass short and got involved at both ends of the pitch. I don't think he gave the ball away once and got a few tackles in as well. He is a big lad so hopefully he will settle in OK.

How often does some unknown teenager sign up and immediately join the reserve side? Is that because he's too old to play for the youth sides? Is he on professional terms?

Our next reserve match is on Valentine's day, not sure who it's against...may be Bolton.

I think the lad will be called only "Rodrigo" as that's what MUTV had as his name on the team sheet and what the commentator referred to him as too, better than Possebon at any rate.

He looks a very composed player; good passer especially. Will see more of him on Thursday though.
