Town's eye on Marsh

By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

TOWN are planning to run the rule over Manchester United youngster Phil Marsh in tonight's Reserve match at Bradford City (7.00).

Club officials were today pushing through the paperwork to allow the versatile 20-year-old to turn out in the final Pontin's Holidays League Central Division match of the season.

The St Helens-based player has been at United for four years but has managed only one first-team appearance.

That was as a striker in this season's Carling Cup third-round win at Crewe.

Marsh, pictured, has also played on the wing and at right-back for United's Reserves, versatility which to Andy Ritchie, adds to his appeal.

"Phil has been told his contract won't be renewed, so he's seeing how the land lies elsewhere," explained the Town manager, who began his own playing career at Old Trafford.

"I believe Tranmere Rovers have also checked him out, and at this stage, that's what I want to do.

"You don't spend four years at United without having something about you.

"I've spoken to contacts there and they said he was certainly worth having a closer look at."

Town were also planning to include Lucas Akins in tonight's clash.

His outing will end a whirlwind spell in which the teenage striker made his first-team debut as a substitute in Friday's 1-1 League I draw at Northampton then came off the bench to level for the Under 18s as they forced a 1-1 stalemate in Saturday's FA Premier Academy League meeting with Nottingham Forest.

Akins, aged 18, is one of a string of second-year Academy players hoping to secure a first-year professional contract.

Danny Racchi, who also came off the bench at Northampton, played against Forest, as did first-team deputy keeper Simon Eastwood.

Town, meanwhile, have fixed up pre-season friendlies against Rochdale, AFC Emley, Bridlington Town, Bradford Park Avenue and Farsley Celtic (see Page 45).
