U18s at West Brom

It's gone unnoticed/uncommented on (probably due to no MUTV coverage/website reports) but the U18s lost 3-0 at WBA this morning. No further details yet, don't know if anyone else knows anything.

Wow I just assumed we had no game for the youngsters today. But they sure are having a rough time as of late, the Blackburn game was so unlucky and may have knocked their confidence a bit.

Highlights at 5.30pm on MUTV tonight.

That's 3 losses on the bounce (without scoring as well). It will be a good test of charachter for them to see how they react next game.

Team:

1. Johnstone
2. Brown
4. Wootton
5. McGinty
3. Fryers
7. Ajose
6. Tunnicliffe
8. Pogba
11. Morrison
9. King
10. Cofie

Subs:
12. Massacci
14. Lingard
15. Fornasier
16. Keane

Cole was out injured.

West Brom:

1. Allsop
2. O'Neil
6. Gayle
5. Malcolm
3. Connolly
7. Lynch
4. Mantom
8. Grier
11. Brown
9. Wood
10. Berahino

Subs:
12. Roofe
13. Tebbutt
14. Fowler
15. Mannion
16. Nabi

From the highlights:

Wood got the first for West Brom from a Brown cross, sliding it in at the far post. Brown scored the 2nd, running onto a Brown flick, outplacing Wootton and sliding it past Johnstone whose angles looked a bit suspect.

Tunnicliffe and Morrison were taken off in the first half for Lingard and Keane after 30 mins.

Cofie hit the post from about 25 yards out, after a weaving run. Berahino somehow missed with a diving header at the far post when completely unmarked. King missed a one-on-one with the keeper after being played through by Cofie.

2-0 at half time.

United seemed to pick it up 2nd half but Johnstone let a 25 yarder from Mantom straight through his hands. Seemed to be one of those days at the back, players left unmarked at crosses etc.

Fornasier on for Pogba, Wootton moving into midfield.

Lingard seemed to be lively when he came on. King missed a clear header in the centre of the goal when he should have at least have got it on target. King also hit the post after twisting past Gayle and the keeper making a great save to tip it onto the post. Wootton also missed a clear header, nodding it straight at the keeper.

We looked a shambles at the back, and out of luck up front but no doubt from the highlights that West Browm merited their win, the front 2 of Brown and Wood very impressive.

Just watching the highlights of this, not seen much of our academy but I hope this wasn't a typical performance.

Impressive? I'll say. If he's quick enough to score from his own flick ons we should sign the fecker up!

Disappointing to hear our defensive woes continue. Wonder how much is goalie related? Sounds as though Johnstone had one of those days (maybe still a bit addled after that face plant) and we've seen with the first team what a massive difference it makes having a confident/competent keeper in nets.

He stuck on his line when he should have come out to close the angle after that through ball, made it easy for the attacker. And the third was awful, just went straight through his hands.

I think I meant Wood!

I think the Youth Cup defeat really knocked their confidence, then losing at home to Liverpool in quick succession.

Probably a bit of a dip in confidence but these things happen as well, especially considering West Brom are no mugs - particularly going forward with a first-teamer/senior international in Wood and a promising England youth international in Berahino.

Thorpe is out injured at the moment, I think it was an ankle injury. I quite like the look of Fornasier too, although McGinty's performances have been far better of late as I thought he was unconvincing at the start of the season. He appears to be settling in now.

Extended highlights.

Part 1/4

Part 2/4

Part 3/4

Part 4/4

Although a defeat, it was an entertaining game, especially the second half. We were very unlucky not to score 2 or 3 ourselves but on the flip side, they could easily have scored twice as many as they did. Defending was woeful to say the least.
