Youth Cup
We've drawn Birmingham at home
MAN UTD TRIP FOR YOUNG BLUES Youth Cup logoBlues have been drawn away to Manchester United in the third round of this season's FA Youth Cup. Although it is probably the hardest possible tie that Blues could have faced, Academy manager Terry Westley has described it as a "great draw" and says it will be a good opportunity for his players to test themselves. "It's a great draw for us," Westley told bcfc.com "We've been picked out against one of the biggest clubs in Europe. "In youth development and with the players they produce and the way they go about things it's easily one of the best clubs. "So for our boys to go up there and pit themselves against their best players will be a terrific challenge for us. "We've had some good runs in the past three seasons but this will be the severest of tests, but one that our players should really be looking forward to. "We've got some good young players of our own with the likes of Ashley Sammons, Mitch McPike and Jordon Mutch who are all England under 19 squad players, as well as the England under 17 goalkeeper Jack Butland." Westley is hopeful that because it is two top flight teams who have been drawn together that Manchester United may elect to use Old Trafford as the venue for the tie. "I know that Manchester United have got permission to play at other grounds - Northwich I think, but they may decide that because it's a Premiership club against a Premiership club to play it at Old Trafford," he said. "I know they did that last year when they played against Chelsea. "Whether our manager (Alex McLeish) can have any influence with Sir Alex we'll have to see, but wherever we play it's a great chance for our youngsters." The third round FA Youth Cup games sponsored by E.ON must be completed by 12 December 2009 and the full draw is: 1 Manchester United v Birmingham City 2 Derby County v Peterborough United 3 Middlesbrough v Everton 4 Wigan Athletic v Tottenham Hotspur 5 Cheltenham Town v Reading 6 Nottingham Forest v Bury Town or Macclesfield Town 7 Milton Keynes Dons v Swindon Town or Leyton Orient or Bishop's Stortford 8 Shrewsbury Town or Morecambe v Hull City 9 Watford v St Albans City or Wycombe Wanderers 10 Liverpool v Wolverhampton Wanderers 11 Notts County or Hartlepool United v Sheffield United 12 Crystal Palace v Bristol City 13 Stockport County or Carlton Town v Fulham 14 Preston North End v Manchester City 15 Cardiff City v Barnsley 16 Torquay United or Norwich City v Millwall or Oxford United 17 Arsenal v Bradford City or Crewe Alexandra 18 Tranmere Rovers v Ipswich Town or Cambridge United 19 Scunthorpe United v Burnley 20 Plymouth Argyle v West Ham United 21 Portsmouth v Huddersfield Town or Atherstone Town 22 Northampton Town or Chesterfield v Brighton & Hove Albion or Ebbsfleet United 23 Sheffield Wednesday v Sunderland 24 Aston Villa v Oldham Athletic or Rochdale 25 York City or Carlisle United v Stoke City 26 Swansea City v West Bromwich Albion 27 Coventry City v Leicester City 28 Bolton Wanderers v AFC Wimbledon or AFC Bournemouth 29 Blackburn Rovers v Blackpool 30 Charlton Athletic or Woking v Chelsea 31 Doncaster Rovers v Newcastle United 32 Queens Park Rangers v Southampton or Hereford United |

Let's hope so. It's been a bit of an inconsistent season from us this year to date, but with a virtually fully fit squad to pick from (excluding the unfortunate Hussein) we should have the resources to make a good run and there isn't really a weak link.

Also, what's the team likely to be? I'm guessing something like Devlin Massacci-Thorpe-Wootton-Fryers Tunnicliffe-Pogba-Petrucci King-Cofie-Keane or Ajose-Keane-King ? |

Think that's a bit (maybe very) simplistic. Just as an example, our 1993 finalists (inc. Scholes, Beckham, Neville x2, Butt, Gillespie, Savage etc) didn't beat anyone notable en route to the final and only just scraped through a semi-final against Millwall before losing the final to Leeds. Any way you can get through the tournament is a positive and I don't believe steamrollering everyone or scraping through the rounds makes any real difference.
That said, don't think we can claim to have been particularly unlucky recently, only had ourselves to blame for the Carlisle upset and we were the architects of our own downfall vs Chelsea, even if it was a tricky draw. Would say we're more due a run in the competition rather than any luck. |

It's just the usual U18 squad plus King and Reece Brown.
Devlin, Johnstone Brown, Massacci, M Keane, Fornasier, McGinty, Thorpe, Wootton, Fryers, Giverin Cole, Morrison, Hussain, Tunnicliffe, Pogba, Petrucci, Brady King, Cofie, W Keane, Lingard, Ajose |

Yeah I thought about adding that but I don't think people think that I take that for granted.
As for Birminghams academy - they have a lousy form in the league. I know it can happen - but I would consider it a gigantic failure if we lose at home to them! |

According to Les Kershaw on young gifted and red united are certain to be without brown and brady and probably king and may also be without massacci, fornasier and a few more for this game which is a pity

With this game being two weeks away, this looks like an injury crisis. They had to call on a couple of 19 year olds for the academy win last weekend so that would be close to 3 weeks out for most of these lads.

Tis grand, Thorpe and McGinty were fantastic at the weekend. Especially McGinty, esaily his best performace. Thorpe seems so consistant. Even Gill has improved alot of late. There might be hope for me yet!
