Found this on Michael Barnes:

The new Ryan Giggs?
Cardinal Newman College student Michael Barnes has been invited for a trial at Manchester United!

The talented student who came to Newman from Southlands High School in Chorley plays on the wing for Newman’s Centre of Excellence. He also plays for the Lancashire under 19 team, as well as playing for Lancaster City first team and their Youth team. It was whilst playing for the Youth team in the FA youth cup that he was spotted by a scout from Manchester United. Michael was invited to visit the Manchester club’s training ground last week, and at the end of that was invited to attend for a full week of training with the teams that play for Manchester United – with the possibility of being asked to carry on for a further 5 weeks, and the possibility of a contract at the end of that time.

Newman’s football Centre of Excellence is used to success. As well as being supported by the Football Association (the only college in the area to have such support), Newman have been National Champions twice over the past 5 years – hardly surprising that their coach (Sean Haselgrove) has just been invited to be the coach for the British College’s under 19 team – due to play in Italy next year!

You can also find out a bit on him here:

Still curious about his age though.

Beat me to it Anders.....not sure on his age........but you can't play in the FA Youth Cup if you re over 18 as of July 1 2005......so therefore he is still 17 or has turned 18 since July..........he is obviously cup-tied for United games..

"Because of his age, Barnes could not be placed on contract with City"

i'm not totally familiar with the rules, but doesn't this indicate that he must be very young?

England School trials indicates that he is 14 or 15......thus why he can't be put on a contract......also if United do sign him.....he will be eligble for Youth duty next year......Also college probably indicates 5th or 6th form...

Kind of impressive to be 15 years old and score a hattrick on U18 level.

Looking at it......I'd say he is 16.......and because of when his birthday falls....is eligible for England Schools...

He played 4 FA Youth Cup ties for Lancaster City.....scored twice vs Woodley Sports (2-1), then played against Selby Town and Formby Town before Lancaster lost on pens at Morecambe.....

This is a similar story to Sean Evans who played for Shrewsbury Town before joining United...

He hasn't overly impressed me so far........he lacks a little pace.....although as you say he hasn't had a decent run.....he played very well on Saturday scoring two and setting up Danny Rose very unselfishly for the last goal....

He is a little small but still may be adapting to English football after playing in Ireland for Home Farm.....

Will find out more info and post when I can....

We beat Shitty from two goals down!!!

"Goal machine" Rossi hit a hat-trick Cooper made the game safe by scoring the fourth goal.

Gary Neville and Kieran Richardson both played 71 minutes, while Louis Saha played full 90 minutes.

Team: Zieler, Lee, Lea, Cathcart, J. Evans, Gibson, Gray, Hewson, Campbell, S. Evans, Rose Subs: Mullan (2), Amos (1), Burns (9), Fagan, C. Evans (11), Barnes (10), Chester (7)......

Campbell scored a hat-trick and Gibson netted a penalty.....an all round good performance....

This was a chance to look at the Youth team to decide on the squad for the tie at Birmingham City on the 15th of December...

Was this a U18 match?

I know this must be a difficult question Tony, but how is the youths at our akademy compared to a couple of seasons ago when we all were hoping for Timm, Eagles etc.

Back then I had MUTV, and I am still wondering why David Jones and Timm is not playing in the PL today.

I think the kids coming through are better and stronger....but it's harrd to tell...Mads Timm has all teh ability in the world....but his attitude is terrible....that's why he won't make it....

David Jones is a brilliant prospect and i don't why Fergie won't give him a chance....he is playing out of his skin at Preston......so maybe he will be recalled in the january window.......

Finally, Paul McShane picked up an injury at Brighton which will keep him out for 2 months...subsequently....he has returned to Carrington for treatment and his loan has finished early as he was going to be recalled in January anyway....

NEWCASTLE T 0, MAN UTD 4

12:00 - 25 November 2005
George Best graced the Lyme Valley Stadium 14 years ago to mark the installation of new floodlights at Newcastle Town, and last night the future stars of Manchester United did the same.

The Northern Ireland superstar was part of a Castle side to take on Stoke City in 1991 and it was apt that, as he continued to fight for his life, the fledgling Red Devils shone for the official opening of the upgraded floodlights. In an entertaining game in front of 517 fans who braved the harsh cold weather, the Manchester United XI came away with a 4-0 win, with hot prospect Frazer Campbell bagging a hat-trick.

It took the 18-year-old just 15 minutes to open the scoring as he latched on to Darren Gibson's cross and, as the Newcastle defence appealed for offside, he slotted home.

The United side were always dangerous going forward and James Jowsey did well to make fine saves from Campbell, Gibson and Craig Cathcart within the next 10 minutes.
