9 point lead on Saturday night?

I don't want to jinx anything but I think the result yesterday is going to provide a real confidence boost to the lads and with Vidic nearly back things can only improve defensively. I think we'll smash Sunderland (we bloody should). I just noticed City are away at Newcastle on Saturday and it's not impossible for the Geordies to pull off a win given their style of play and the St James Park atmosphere.

Could be a good weekend.

I suggested earlier Lynk should start a thread about how terrible a run Newcastle are on and that it surely cannot change anytime soon.

Pointless thread.

I think that City will win their next 4 and we need to too. We have a tricky away at Swansea after the Sunderland game, the other three we really should pick up three points in.

Sure, it's possible to go 9 points up but I don't see the point of pointing it out noiw. Despite my recent acknowledge that Lucretius was right (basically, that all living things turn to dust after they die and there is no "afterlife" and there is no God to whom we must make an account of corporeal existence when we're at the doorstep of the heavenly pearly gates), I get superstitious about counting chickens before they hatch.

The prudent course of action, even for us posters, is to discuss what it's going to take to beat Sunderland, the very definition of a banana peel. And then after we beat them, regale in the fact that we're 9 points up. At least until City claw back 3 points to make it 6 again.

But Newcastle are on a terrible run. They lose four in a row, beat Wigan, then lost to Fulham, who'd not scored a goal in three. City will also have the confidence from last season's trip there. City will win this. It's important we beat Sunderland too.

City have got five pretty straightforward games now. The only tricky part for me is going to Sunderland on boxing day, and following it up three days later with a trip to Norwich. Easy enough games, but the travelling could affect them.

Newc (A)
Reading (H)
Sunderland (A)
Norwich (A)
Stoke (H)

Even after Arsenal they've got Fulham (H) and QPR (A).

Three out of four away games is the tough part I guess, not the opposition.

We, on the other hand, have:

Sunderland (H)
Swansea (A)
Newcastle (H)
West Brom (H)
Wigan (A)

I have a sneaky feeling we'll drop points at Swansea, but realistically, we should be looking to be six points clear on 2 January.

The only one of these matches that really concerns me is Newcastle. Yes, at Old Trafford, but still, it's Newcastle. First, they'll be fighting for their lives due to relegation fears that have cropped up after today's fiasco. And second, they'll take last season's job on us and come in with confidence. We should beat them, but this I would have some pre-game jitters over. Boxing Day too, for whatever that's worth.

I would say swansea away is much more of a hazard.

Neither of the away games will be easy. Swansea have been very good at times (last season we should have dropped points there, I remember the game quite clearly and we were pretty dire in spite of a 1-0 win, it was a string of 1-0 wins after City fiasco) while Wigan already beat us at their place last season with a good performance (although this time it's not your typical in-form Wigan that strikes at the end of season, it's a standard Wigan that rolls over).

early chico goal was it not? last season alot of the top teams lost points at Swansea, and they are arguably a better team now so it will be tough

Yes, it was. I remember Sinclair missing a sitter and them generally dominating the play with plenty of fast passing. They were poor in front of goal though which cost them.

They beat City at their place, and quite deservedly too, so we cannot underestimate them. They are a good side.

Newcastle have predictably fallen back down to earth with a bang. Cisse, Ba and Ben Arfa were all brilliant last year for Newcastle but only Ba has been able to replicate (to be fair Ben Arfa has looked good but been injured). I think Cabaye is injured as well. We should beat them comfortably at home and even last year when they were in form we dominated the game for 90 minutes missing countless opportunities (and conceded a pen that never was). Swansea away is a much harder game and I won't be disappointed with a point there providing we win the other 4 fixtures.

It's always right to assume every opponent in the league is a tough opponent. Even if we beat a Wigan or whoever 4-0 we'll have to earn it. I would fear Newcastle at OT, however, more than I would Swansea is their house, but I could be wrong. The tie-breaker for me is that Newcastle have entered a period of desperation by virtue of dropping near the relegation zone when it's still actually mathematically possible for them end up in nthe final table with a European spot. Crazy, that. When Wigan beat us last season, and I'm going off memory so I may be wrong, they were desperately fending off relegation. It's those clubs that scare me a lot more than clubs who are comfortably in midtable (like Swansea as of today) and can look at a United fixture and know they can afford to lose that game, home or away.

We should most definitely beat woeful Sunderland but, I also see City beating Newcastle, quite comfortably, in fact. St James's Park isn't the fortress it was last season and Newcastle have been pretty awful so far.
