Until the 08 team emulates everything the 99 team did, then the 99 team are better.

Inter: UEFA Cup holders, Runners-up in Serie A (when it was the toughest league in the world). Ronaldo, Baggio, Djorkaeff, Zamorano, Zanetti, Pagliuca etc. Good side.

Juve: Champions of Italy, Champions League finalists the previous 3 seasons, UEFA Cup finalists the year before that. Zidane, Davids, Deschamps etc. They were the benchmark in Europe.

Kiev, Lisbon, Lyon & Roma really don't compare.

Thats when they have the right to be compared, not now.

Agree 100%. I would have typed a similar post but my memory failed me...for example i couldnt remember if deschamps was still playing at that time

...getting old.

For me its not enough to just win the trophies (I mean Chelsea came bloody close to a Qudruple last season!), but its the manner in which the 99 side won them. An FA Cup run against Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle, its about as hard as you could have asked for (and the way in which Liverpool and Arsenal were beaten was just incredible). Overcoming one of the best Arsenal sides in recent memory (Double winners no less) on the last day of the season to win the League. Beating Juve in their own back yard and never giving in against Bayern in the final. Its the character of that side which I admire most, not just the number of wins/losses or goals for/against.

And at the end of the day you can't agrue against Beckham\Keane\Scholes\Giggs!

Because for that season Cole and Yorke were unstoppable. Yorke was the finest striker in Europe in 99 in my opinion.

true...but im saying thats what they have to do as a minimum to start the comparisons.

Never giving in against bayern without scholes and keane it should be noted!

The 99 team had about the hardest possible competition in the cup and champions league, and they came through both.

The 08 team has better league form over the season. The 99 team finished with 79 points and needed to win their last game. They never really took control of the championship run in, which the 08 team looks to have done.

A purely subjective view that owes nothing to analysis or statistics - I like watching this team more. Maybe it's because in 99 we were winning our fifth PL in 7 years and winning the CL seemed overdue.

The current lot still feel like a new team to me - and I'm watching to see how good they'll get. Much as I want the CL I feel like it's "due" rather than overdue and that makes it exciting rather than painful (though I can't say I'm fond of the idea that if we get through to the final we'll play an English team - that's not right, Barca should have been the final!)

If you could have a match between the teams? The 99 team were lucky as well as good - never discount the value of luck. I'm still waiting to see how lucky the 08 team are.

Are you forgetting the 3-3s against Barca, the 8-1 at Forest, the 2-2 in Munich, the 3-2 in Turin?

The 1999 team had far more flair - played two up front for a start!

Classic case of whoever was around set the standard. I dont think we'd have seen the treble winning side drop as many points if they knew they couldnt afford to. sounds a silly thing to say but its not. Took us a while to adjust to arsenal and chelsea raising the bar and get out the habbit of slow starts and great run ins.

the 99 team were lucky so often that you have to believe it was more than luck. It wasnt one off bits of luck like say liverpool..it was constant and throughout the season. You have to believe their actions went along way to creating that luck. Smikes saving bergkamps pen...luck? beating juve after going 2 down luck?? (inzaghi having scored the flukiest goal ive ever seen)..etc etc

We've had a decent bit of luck so far this season without seeming to dictate and dominate the big occasions. You look at the big games we've played..chelsea home red early doors, arsenal...hmmm, liverpool fair enough, roma..hmmmm.

We'll know how good this side is after the camp nou. Shouldnt be a daunting prospect but it is for me, far from convinced. i wasnt fooled by our performance in rome.

Im not saying the 99 team didnt have flair - or that this team doesnt have steel. I guess perhaps Im just repeating myself in the individual ability comment. This team has Ronaldo in it, basically, who has more flair than anyone in the 99 team did. This team has more players who are happy taking players on. 99 was an efficient, goal scoring / match winning machine. Measured by stepovers and tricks, this team seems further ahead.

Fair enough if people dont agree though.
