Depends on how you'd judge importance though, doesnt it? Who in your opinion is the most important cw? Consider the backup we have for him and then the backup we have for carrick. Thats how i judge his importance. The only midfielder in our squad capable of doing his job.

He's been really consistent for a fair while and there hasn't been much mention of it - not really fair when we consider how much he's been decimated in the past. Much has been made of our midfield woes but we haven't been so bad there recently - I thought it was good against Arsenal (first half particularly).
I'm not Carrick's biggest fan but I'm really glad for him that he's doing so well currently, and he should be the first starter in our midfield at the moment. |

Carrick's been steadily improving since around March 2011. By and large, his form has been terrific. He's the form central midfielder in the Premier League - no credit though.
No matter, you know he's on his game when the critics are silenced - that's as good as it gets. They'll pipe up next time he has an under par game. What's most noticeable is his sudden willingness to mix up the 'safe' passes with the attacking ones. What has caused the sudden surge of confidence? His 18 months of poor form coincided with a niggling injury or two, perhaps he is now in tip-top physical shape? Perhaps he has suddenly realised that his inferiority relative to Barca's midfield doesn't mean he needs to regress into his shell? Perhaps he's taken Fergie's advice and realised, at 30, that it's now his time to run the midfield? In this form, he's a class act and where the debate once raged over who should replace him, it's now centred on who should play alongside him. That's a real positive for us because we need continuity in midfield and Carrick's got the ability, excepting injuries, to play 50 games a season. And with regular midfield selections, we'll get better rhythm and understanding in that area. |

No. He was out early during the season, and we had a great run back then. He's indispensable in the cover he gives to the defense, but he's not our most important player. If he is, there's a problem somewhere.
And his critics have shut up, and he's been getting praise, because... wait for it... he's been playing very well

We're never as cohesive without him in the side - we don't attack as well, and we don't look as secure defensively. |

He is one of our most important players. There you have it, I'm a pedantic bastard
I think we miss Vidic more. As good as Smalling, Evans and Rio have been, you just can't replace Vidic out there. |

Agreed. There was a thread in the newbies recently about the player of the season so far and I said in there that I can't look past him; he's been by far our most consistent performer.

Proverbial first name on the team sheet.
Helps having a rejuvenated Scholes who's playing like he's just found an extra credit in the arcade machine when he thought it was Game Over. |

When he plays like this, there is no controversy, no dividing of opinion and no doubt as to his quality. If he was to keep playing this well for the next 3 months (touch wood), he will walk it as our player of the season.

Well disciplined and some great tackles and interceptions. I'd say it's almost impossible for Carrick to have a bad game with Giggs and/or Scholes in the same team though, they compliment him so well and make his job 10 x easier, and allow him the space to play his natural game.

I might get slated by some for saying this, but I don't think he was as good as some people are saying today. He was solid, but not spectacular. I certainly don't think he was MOTM as some people were suggesting.

I thought they were fine, we just needed to use the ball better in their final third. Were it not for the stupid goals we were largely in control. In attack we were a bit slow and so let chelsea get back in numbers. Once we turned up the pace though we cut through them pretty easy it was just the final ball.

I didn't watch the game live so was able to judge it without being pissed off about the scoreline. We bossed midfield the whole game. Carrick was the best midfielder on the pitch.
