Anyway, what is the point of comparing him to Ronaldo. This thread is about comparing him to legends. Players of his generation and the past. Ronaldo is not there yet.

Giggs is widely regarded by fellow professionals as one of the best of his generation. I never said he was one of the top 5 players ever. In his generation, there is Ronaldo and Zidane, then a group of players who are almost the same. Giggs is one of them.

What make Ronaldo a legend? Ok he had shown great promise in his early part of his career and had won quite a few honours with Brazil. There again, his career where tarnished with controversial moves which basically show what a big twat he is.

Zidane is surely a legend but still, he had never shown loyalty to the side he played with. Not to forget his fiery character which costed France another world cup title.

In my opinion Ronaldo was just a great player, Zidane was a legend with France but not with the club, but none of these players deserves the respect Giggs and Scholes has.

I reckon Scholes is rated higher, you said it yourself wingers are often inconsistent cant control games as much as CMs, AMs, and strikers. If both players were to play their absolute best in a game in their prime, I guarantee you that Scholes would have more of an impact on the game

Yep, but all wingers are like that. For years, wingers feared to join united because they knew it is impossible to dislodge Giggsy. That is one of the reasons Kewell joined Liverpool instead of united.

Giggs is a legend how high up would i rate him im not to sure since I never got to watch him in his prime. From what I have seen of him in video and the last 3 years he has been extremely loyal.

That said his 10 man goal against Arsenal in the Fa Cup is one of the greatest one man goals I have ever seen.

It would be up there with the Maradona goal if not for the fact that Vieira gave away the ball.

Yep, but that Arsenal defence was regarded as the best in the country and arguably better than the England defence.

Ronaldo is a legend because in the 90's which was possibly on of the best decades for strikers, he stood head and shoulders above them all.

Shearer, Kluivert, Cole, York, Vierri, Del Pierro, Sheva, Inzaghi, Zamarano, Raul, Batisstuta, RVN

A twat yes he is but at his best before the knee injuries he was a 1 man demolition army, more so than Zidane. If Zidane is a France legend for winning them international title then why not Ronaldo, 2 wc, 2 finals, 2 copa americas

He really wasn't. Rivaldo was the best player at the 2002 World Cup. Lets not turn this thread into that discussion, we had enough already.

Lets not forget how he made our whole defence his bitch at OT. Any other striker ever done that to us at OT? I think Bentley's the first person to hit a hattrict against us besides Ronaldo in some 15 odd years and his was at home.

Other than his great goal against England, which was set up totally by Dinho, the most notable thing he did was take a total dive v Turkey

1st match, his cross to Ronaldo got the goal, also scored
2nd match, through pass again to Ronaldo got a goal, also scored
3rd match, scored
last 16, scored, released kleberson who crossed to Ronaldo to score
Quaterfinal, Scored

Final, his parried shot allowed Ronaldo to score
Final, second goal, his clever step over fooled the defence and gave ronaldo the pace to score.

Yup, he did nothing that tournament...

That is, he has never really been in contention for FIFA World Player of the Year or for the Ballon D'Or; whereas players like Beckham, Owen, Gerrard, Lampard, and Shearer all have. I don't think any of those players, on their best season, were better than Giggs on his.

But as I say, I do think that football fans in general give Giggs the respect which he deserves. He is, afterall, an amazingly unique British footballer, and I need not recite his biography or list of honours to prove this. It's very difficult to perceive a player like Giggs and to not hold his career in esteem. Even United's biggest rivals respect him. 'He's the only one of their lot I've ever liked'.

On the other hand, has Giggs ever had a season where he genuinely could have been considered to be the best player in the world? I personally don't think that he has, and I don't know if many others would disagree.

To answer the thread's question: I rate Giggs very highly as a legend firstly for his 'uniqueness' as a player, and secondly for his skill, but I would not consider him to be in the top five players of the past 15 years.
thats your opinion and i respect that but i cant think of any players consistenly better than giggs in his era besides zidane and ronaldo and maybe batistuta. and we've all seen how ronaldo's career has taken a shit, batistuta fucked off to the middle east, and zidane was poor in his later years until the world cup. the fact that giggs is still an integral part of the best football team on the planet at his age is legendary in its own right

2002 WC as a whole was a crap fest never a benchmark to rate a player or a manager.

I've followed 7 World cups in my life but the quality of football was nothing worse than 2002.

All the four favourite teams France, Argentina, Portugal and Italy were knocked out early.

The worst team of the preseason and the qualifiers Brazil won the tournament.

If a team like Germany that was let down even by their hardcore fans can reach the final it says alot about the tournament.

fred's brilliant and well throught deffo about legends is laughable.

Biggest problem putting Giggs at the top is consistency, he was never consistent, hence why he was never in contention for a huge individual award but regardless of the match he had he always worked hard for the team, which is my kind of player, the mercurial once who you never know what will bring to the table any given match day. Which is why he is my fav player of all time.

I was understating him, considering he should have been suspended for a game I have to dock him some overall points. Regardless of what he did Ronaldo still more. 8 in 7

That goal was all Ronaldo

He did what every good striker is meant to do and follow through, but Rivaldo's shooting technique made that goal, he had a knack for making the ball bounce just before it hits the keeper which makes it very difficult to grasp.
