Andy Cole

I'm too stupid to do links, but the official site has an item on Andrew Cole, a true United fan with season tickets for himself and son.

Top man, Andy Cole, not given the respect he's due by many United fans, I think.

No never got the respect he probably deserved. A fine player.

If I am not wrong, all former first team players get free season tickets. I think.

He overcame a poor, unsteady start to become a much much better all round player that we bought. He's a template for what good coaching can do because newcastle used him as purely a goalscorer

is very underrated actually and suffered from playing in an era when England had a good selection of strikers and a certain shearer.

He was quality. And stats prove that he's got on of the best conversion rates inside the box(better than Shearer, I think). Not bad for a player who supposedly missed chances.

Not a legend IMO but a very good player on his day. Missed alot of piss easy chances, which lead to the usual tabloid bollox. He was an excellent instinctive finisher, struggled sometimes when in possession, Yorke was the making of him at our club.

Andy Cole was a very important player for us. Have always rated him I think it was the West Ham game that gave him that poor finish rate reputation and Glenn Hoddle the cnut.

In all seriousness though, he was a good striker. Fast and a good goalscorer. We'd love to have an option like him in the squad right about now.

All strikers miss chances, though. The fact that his conversion rate was as good if not better than Shearer's proves that he was pretty clinical. Unless stats lie, that is. Got far too much flack. . . perhaps it was down the his transfer fee. I think his control could be off at times, but he created so much space with his pace.

A "poor and unsteady start"? 12 goals from 17 starts in his first season.

Also, there was an interesting stat in the Guardian last year that if you exclude penalties, Cole's shots-to-goals ratio was better than Shearer's.

.
Yes. And think it was inside the box. I have no idea why people believed Hoddle.

was it 12 in 17? fuck me lol. It was a few years back in fairness weren't it . Also only 17 starts? was that due to injury?

The main point is yes he missed a few, but I think that's because we asked more from andy and there is no doubt in time he became alot more comfortable on the ball and a better player in general

He was cup-tied so only played league games (he started in all bar one).

Against who did he score a cracking scissor kick from the edge of the area?

Dunno about being best in Europe, but he had two superb seasons for us.

Cole had a number of good seasons, without hitting the peak Yorke did in 98/99. Wasn't far off that season though. But Yorke scored more, and more crucial goals as well. The two against Inter, the two against Chelsea in the cup, the one against Liverpool in the cup etc.
