Beckham to keep emotions in check

Dont know if it was posted good read though,

BECKHAM TO KEEP EMOTIONS IN CHECK

David Beckham has promised he will not celebrate if he scores against Manchester United.

After 394 appearances for the club, the England midfielder believes it would be inappropriate behaviour should he find the net for AC Milan.

United face the Italians in the Champions League at the San Siro a week on Tuesday, with the return leg on March 10 at Old Trafford.

It is the first time Beckham has faced his former club and he remains grateful to the fans who backed him after he was sent off against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup.

He told Inside United: "Sometimes emotion can get the better of you when you score but I do not think I would celebrate. I respect the supporters and the club.

"The relationship I have with the fans is still important to me. I went through some difficult times but they never stopped supporting me.

"I would not have got through everything without them. To me they are the best fans in the world and the support they gave me week in, week out was incredible. Nothing will ever better that."

Beckham, on loan to Milan from Los Angeles Galaxy, has an abiding affection for the Premier League champions.

He added: "I always wish I was part of Manchester United, it is just in me. Even though I am not there any more, I am still a huge fan.

"Coming to terms with not being a United player was certainly the toughest thing I've ever had to deal with.

"When you are a Manchester United player and a Manchester United fan you never want to play for any other club.

"I always want them to do well and be successful because the club still means so much to me. I've still got season tickets and I will always keep them because I love to watch every game where possible.

"I would love to take my sons one day. United will always be such a special place to me, so we will just have to see what the future holds."

Beckham's 13-year spell at United, in which he scored 85 goals, ended in July 2003 when he moved to Real Madrid and he admits he found it difficult to cope.

The England midfielder said: "United was the club I always wanted to play for and I loved every minute of my time there. The first few years (after leaving) were hard and there were a lot of things I missed.

"When I was at Real Madrid it just never felt right to come back to Old Trafford. The thought of playing against United always gave me that sick feeling because I missed the club so much.

"But when the draw was made this time it felt as though it was the right time to go back. I felt really emotional.

"It will also be extremely emotional for myself and my family on the night. I met so many amazing people during my time there, on and off the pitch, that I am looking forward to seeing everyone again.

"It is the biggest club in the world and it is one you always want to be a part of."

Still has season tickets? Plural? So he accounts for at least two empty seats every match!

Nice. But I don't like this whole 'not celebrating' thing. It's not disrespectful to celebrate when scoring a goal against a former club; if anything it's disrespectful to your current club to not celebrate.

mmmmm not sure about this , you can still celebrate and still not be disrespectful to a former team.
Iam leaning to the thought that not celebrating with your new team mate would be just has disrespectful.
You dont have to run around like Tevez and be a twat , just do what you normaly do , I for one would not think any less of him.

Didn't Big Man virtually just get smacked with a nail-incrested plank for doing something similar(amongst other things)? Sack Becks, he's a disgrace. Take Bentley to SA instead

Good read. He has a lot of feelings towards everything sourrinding Manchester United and no team will ever take that away from him, i bow to him in that respect.

On a side note, Berba never even celebrated until after the fifth game iirc - the disrespectful cunt!

Is it me or is Beckham coming across as a bit desperate to ensure the crowd doesn't give him a Tevez-like reception? Relax, Dave, you're still a hero!!

Cue a heated debate in a David Beckham thread about the merits of Berba between the Berbasex crew and the anti-Berbatov society

Nah I think he's just a genuine fan excited to be coming back.

There will soon be the usual anti Beckham posts though.

I'm tired of this "I'll not celebrate against my former club" politically correct bullshit. For 90 minutes he’ll be our enemy, but before and after the game he should get good reception from the crowd. Great player for United and I’m pretty sure his heart still belongs to United.

Then let's hope it's not 0-0 on aggregate in the last five minutes at OT and Beck's is standing over a free-kick left of the D twenty-five yards from goal. I'd be revising such a prediction in that event.

Dean Ashton had a very low-profile celebration after scoring a wonderful overhead kick at the Stretford End for West Ham a couple of seasons back. They were 3-0 down at the time in the first half but it was down to the fact he grew up a Red in Mancunian Cheshire.
I don't care who you are, if you score a goal like that, you'd be well within your rights to celebrate it.

usually when players talk about playing against their old club they say the stuff he's said but also that they'll be trying to win still no matter what, maybe he just forgot to mention it

No but it shows respect,if you have scored a goal agains a former club there is nothing you can do to show you still hold respect for that club bar not celebrating, means a lot.

I love Dean Ashton.

Players don't have to celebrate. If they don't celebrate as a mark of respect, well, you have to respect that. I agree with some of the gist in this thread, i.e players shouldn't feel forced to not celebrate against their old clubs, but if they genuinely want to show some respect to the fans and the club itself, personally, I think that is nice to see.

Becks will get a nice reception right ? I hope so.

He was on Goals on Sunday on, erm, Sunday, and seemed a nice genuine bloke. Such a shame what happened to him. He mentioned how great it was to score that goal at OT.

I thought it was more down to the fact he injured himself whilst scoring that wonder goal?
I might be wrong, or maybe it was due to the fact they were 3-0 down before it went in.

He carried on playing the match from memory, it was just a lovely finish and very well received by the Stretford End, he gave them a little nod to those who clapped it. I remember watching it and, having a few beers in me as it's on late here, I applauded it as soon as it hit the net despite being one of them daft drunk Reds who abuses fuck out of the opposition via the safety of my living room.
Ashton was one of those big, solid players who looked a little clumsy but was ultimately a very skilful and succesful striker and there was a story a few weeks back about Fergie should take Heskey to Old Trafford. Well not quite, we could have seen a fit Dean Ashton at Old Trafford at some point as I think he'd have been a great foil for Rooney.

I thought Ronaldo's celebration when he scored against Sporting was very respectful. Becks had a right to celebrate if they beat us. I'm sure the fans will cheer if he misses a free kick. It's all part of the game. I think he can be happy for his current team without seeming like a complete prat about it.

There is such a thing as a happy medium and most knowledgeable fans will realize that one game won't change the respect he has earned from his many years of service to the club.

I don't think he's even taking them. I believe Ronaldinho is the main free kick taker for them when they get around the box.
