Breaking news on SSN.

Always thought he did well with Bulgaria.

48 goals in 77 appearances. That's a ridiculously good strike-rate.

Good news for us, I suppose. Although I hope this isn't just a reflection of his increasingly fragile mental state...

Good news, shows he's committed to the United cause - reckon this is the last throw of the dice to try to make it here..

Confirmed. Quitting the national team, to focus on family and IMO, to stop being the excuse of everyone for the lack of players in the Bulgarian team. Bar the Petrovs of course, but they'll follow him in a year probably.

Good news. people should want him to make it here as technically he can be very good for United. The goals can still come. A good pre season and you never know. What was better this season, is he was in the positions to miss them. If he took them he'd have got 20+ easy

If that's the case, he's no longer a liability to the team so get behind him.

If he scores 20 EPL goals now that would be great!

Bulgaria and Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov has announced his retirement from international football.

The 29-year-old became Bulgaria's all-time leading goalscorer last year when he netted his 48th goal for his country, after earning more than 70 caps.

Berbatov succeeded Stiliyan Petrov as captain in 2007 but has now decided to hang up his international boots.

The former CSKA Sofia, Bayer Leverkusen and Tottenham ace made his first appearance for Bulgaria in 1999 and has enjoyed 11 years with the national side.

"It was a difficult decision but sometimes we have to take difficult decisions," he said.

End
"I came to the decision that as of now I have retired from the national team.

"It wasn't a decision I took lightly and I have reconsidered several times.

"Everything has a beginning and an end and that is today."

Berbatov was unable to guide Bulgaria to qualification for the 2010 World Cup, and he received criticism in his homeland for his performances throughout the campaign.

They finished third in Group 8, four points behind the Republic of Ireland, who later went on to lose to France in a play-off.

Exhausted
The 29-year-old added: "I feel exhausted and now there are many guys who can emerge from my shadow. For them the moment has come.

"You should always know when to stop.

"I haven't discussed it with my club team. I guess it will come out in England and Sir Alex (Ferguson) will call me."

Berbatov broke Bulgaria's all-time goalscoring record previously held by Hristo Bonev with two in November's friendly against Malta.

But he has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford following his £30.75million move from White Hart Lane in August 2008, scoring just 26 goals in two seasons
Exhausted

Seriously though, this is good for United.

Surely the height of laziness.

Waiting for Sir Alex to call him instead of putting efforts of dialing the numbers.

Or that fact that mafia men have continually plagued his return visits with threats of kidnap and extortion. It's a safety issue and good on him to say "Lookit, enough is enough. Fix your f'n corrupt system then I will come back."

Be funny if we somehow drew a Bulgarian team in the CL and had to play there

Berbatov quits Bulgaria

13/05/2010 10:58, Report by Nick Coppack

Dimitar Berbatov has called time on his international football career.

The 29-year-old, Bulgaria’s captain and record goal scorer, made the announcement in Sofia on Thursday. He told media at the Vasil Levski national stadium: “It was a difficult but well considered decision. There are moments in life when we have hard decisions to make.

"The reasons are many and different. I am happy with what I have achieved with the national team and do not regret anything. From now on I will focus fully on my commitments to Manchester United."

Berbatov made his Bulgaria debut in November 1999 and went on to score 48 goals in 78 appearances for the national team.

He joins fellow Reds Paul Scholes (England), Ryan Giggs (Wales) and Edwin van der Sar (Netherlands) in international retirement.
