Big news... maybe....
The squad for tonights reserve game...
United squad: Foster, Zieler; C Evans, SIlvestre, Eckersley, Chester, Norwood; Jones, Possebon, Cleverley, Galbraith, Eikrem, Brady; Eagles, Welbeck, Macheda. No Gary? Either its another set back, which will surely rule him out for the rest of the season... Or its great news and he might feature of Saturday? |

There was a piece in the Telegraph this morning about how Gary was hoping to contibute to the final push for trophies in the campaign.
It would be great news if true, and to have him back playing again. Taking nothing away from Wes or anything, but you know. |

Wouldn't be surprised if he gets a place on the bench. He won't start though.

Wes cannot attack for his life. He is a very good defender, and I don't care that he just scored his first goal since God knows when and I appreciate the job he has done for the team.
However I think a lot of people have forgotten how many goals Gary sets up, and how he is simply the best right back in the world. Cannot wait to see our captain play again. |

He was promoted to the reserves at around Christmas and has struggled a bit getting used to the step up in class (especially the phsyical side of the game, he's a fairly gangly 17-year old after all). It hasn't helped him that our reserve wingers are fairly shite (hence, presumably, Brady getting promoted so quickly) which means that Welbeck has had shocking service. Hi hat-trick was against City ( ) and was hopefully a sign that he is settling in to the reserve league. Be great to see him kick on from there now, hopefully starting tonight. |

I actuially don't think Welbeck has looked too good for the reserves at all. He's really struggled. Up until the last game, that is. |

I know who he is, but it's a bit strange to see him in the reserve squad as he's yet to play for the u18s. Macheda is a classy young player. A fairly big, very skillful forward with a swagger about him. Reminds me of a young Totti.

the thing is, wes brown has been great, as have the back for as a unit, we have potentially about a dozen cup finals remaining, he maybe our captain, he maybe a top right back but.........if i was fergie i think id leave it untill next year
he's going to be far from sharp and you dont want to be playing against ashley young unless your fit |

So from the official website I can understand that Gary Neville seems to want more training with the first team squad. Reserve games are good for building up your fitness but nothing beats practice games with our first team squad players. He may be ready for the bench but he will have to hope an opportunity comes along eventually.

There is no way Gary will dispose Wes from the starting line-up. He might get a few minutes here and there when the match is already decided. But he has been out for a year and no matter how good is he (and how better than Wes) there is no way he could be 100% fit for run in like this. I think every United fan miss our captain and the nearest possible date of his return is the new season after a proper summer practice.

you're right, though. Red Nev sets up a lot of attacks, and i'll tell you one man who's definitely missing him: Ronaldo. i know it sounds rather ridiculous given the number of goals he's banging in, but Ronaldo and Gaz formed a frightening attacking pair down the right last season. whenever he was double-marked, Gary was always there to provide an outlet. Brown's done well, but he's no Nev. |

It hasn't helped that he doesn't have anyone playing alongside him, he's being used as a lone forward pretty much with Eagles behind him. Couple that with us being pretty limp from the wings and him stepping up a level and you can maybe see why he's struggled a bit. Will be nice to see him playing with the first team in the pre-season.
