Boss picks out Tevez display

Carlos Tevez's tremendous performance was the silver lining in the cloud of defeat for United in the UEFA Super Cup final.

Sir Alex Ferguson picked out the striker's display as a highlight, saying: "I thought Tevez was the outstanding player on the pitch, I thought he was fantastic. I think he was our best player."

The Argentinian's tenacity helped the Reds to drag themselves back from two goals down and almost take the game into extra time. He was at the heart of virtually every attack, teeing up Nemanja Vidic for his strike and laying on further chances for players including substitutes John O'Shea and Ji-sung Park.

"I thought we had the best chances throughout the match," added Sir Alex.

"There was one in the first half for Wayne Rooney, and some in the second half when we were 2-0 down. That was when we played probably our best football.

"I think it was an open game, I think both teams did very well. The players have put a good effort in on a warm night and there were a lot of tired players at the end of it."

Tiredness, not to mention frustration, might have explained Paul Scholes' moment of madness when he punched in a cross from Wes Brown, United's other sub.

"It was maybe an instinctive thing he did, it’s a bit unfortunate. When you see some of the tackles in the game and then somebody gets sent off for punching the ball…"

The manager may wish to avoid Zenit in the knockout rounds of the Champions League. He assessed the Russians as "a very good team with good movement. They’re strong. I think they’ll have a good chance (in the competition)."

Behind the scenes he will let the team know how much they disappointed everyone. Tevez can be proud of his contribution though.

Fair play to Tevez. Would've shat myself had he picked up an injury in this match, however.

Tevez epitomises the spirit of Manchester United. He takes responsibility and is a fighter who plays for the team. A class act.
