The contumelious treatment of one Dimitar Berbatov

Arguably one of the very few mistakes Sir Alex Ferguson has made during his Illustrious and unparalleled coaching career. The mishandling of Berbatov has in my humble opinion already cost us dearly and from the way it looks will continue to cost us.

What an absolute heap of crap. If Rooney is injured I think an extra man in midfield is a better option in big games than Berbatov as a second striker. Berbatov is a luxury we have to come in and score goals against weaker teams but agsint top teams the battles are won in midfield and with Berbatov in the team we tend to get exposed to much and over run in midfield.

Fergie obviously rates Welbeck higher. Hernandez has been getting the same treatment than Berba.

I respect your opinion but ignoring Dimitar Berbatov even when Rooney is not fit and playing Welbeck as a lone striker instead is just one giant cock up though.

I think it’s Fergies lack of faith for Berbatov in big games. I am not his biggest fan and he does frustrate me, that when at certain times he has been needed he has failed to turn up.

Do I think he has been poorly treated? No I don’t think any PL footballer is poorly treated. But I do believe Fergie made a mistake in dropping his top scorer from the Champions League Final. Any player would feel awful in that situation and in that respect Fergie has handled him poorly

Berbatov had plenty of chances in his first two and a half seasons. If Sir Alex doesn't trust him its because of his performances on the pitch.

When was the last time Berbatov turned a game on his head against big opposition?

For fucks sake. If being the Premier League's top scorer doesn't earn Sir Alex' trust nothing will. It's down to mismanagment plain and simple.

Some might say we should have played Rooney in a 2 man midfield considering the options we have upfront.

If Fergie believed in him he would play him. He clearly does not. I dont know if that is mismanagement or not.

Thats because we still got over ran in midfield in that game despite winning. We tend to nearly always get over run in midfield in big games with Berbatov on the pitch! I think the fact that Newcastle thumped us recently and annihilated us in midfield with Berbatov having starting and having a stinker that day has persuaded Fergie to make it the last time he will trust the Bulgarian in a big important match. But in lesser games at home to wigan and stuff he will get a run and if we have a striker injury crises he will get a run too. I wouldnt be surprised if he got a run against Ajax.

He played very well I thought that day. With Berbatov it comes down to:

1) Does he have the full trust of the manager in big games?

2) Can he be utilised well in the current first team system?

3) Does he really have a big game presence?

Half the goals that made him top scorer came in just 3 games. Its not like he was banging them in every game, before the Blackburn game when he got 5 he had gone like 11 without a goal.

So you're blaming the guy who scored the first FECKING HATTRICK against Liverpool in many decadesl for almost letting the lead slip away? Try harder next time...

If anything SAF values him highly.

Berbatov can be likened to a classic car which is occasionally taken for spin a few times a year.

Rooney played that game as well when he got his hatrick.

He obviously isn't good enough to play up top on his own in the big games otherwise he would. I don't think the gaffer personally trusts him. There's been a few not so successful signings but Fergie won't let them go and he will get as much as he can for all they're worth to keep a fresh squad.

Despite last season, signing Berbatov will go down as a mistake in Ferguson's career. Never could see him starting regularly for us without changing our system and he isn't a good enough player to do that.

The mistake was buying him, at that price. But who knew? Sometimes these things just don't work out. A bit like Veron didn't. There's no particular reason - though in Berba's case he may just not have the right character to flourish at United, not quite enough self-belief. I'm not sure whether MikeUpNorth would classify him as a 'winner'.

Amazing player though. I do feel sorry for him... he seems so sad

Let's recapitulate: Berbatov was the top scorer of the League even though Ferguson clearly doesn't think too highly of him. This in itself is one of the greater accomplishments of the past few years by a single player.

If anything Ferguson has been patient in his handling of Berbatov. Most teams would have got rid after the 2nd poor season. Look at Torres and he has only been at Chelsea for a year.

No seriously I firmly believe in what I say. If Berbatov had been signed by Chelsea or City or any other similar club and given similar performances he would have been long gone by now. So you can argue that Fergie has been patient by sticking by him.

Also worth noting if he was to leave it wouldn't be for a starting place at rival club. He wouldn't make the first XI anywhere else in my view without stepping down so again Fergie isn't treating him unjustly. Berbatov is just being overrated in your eyes. Strange you preach such patience on an experienced player who has been 3 and a half years yet lack this on a youngster who has been in the country less than 6 months.

Quite simply, it's the fact that he's too good a player to be warming our bench. He deserves to start most games, it's just not possible here with the rise of young starlets. I wouldn't be surprised to see him go back to Spurs, where he would be the main man up front.

Unfortunate for him, but he came with overly large expectations due to the price tag and that's always been his burden.

Against the big teams, rooney plays as a virtual 3rd CM. Berba cannot do that. Which is why he didnt play even when rooney was missing vs pool. He'l definitely start against stoke if rooney is unfit. you can out good money on that.

I'm not preaching patience I accuse Ferguson of mismanaging a fantastic talent.

Funny that people like you call a guy "overrated" who just last season SCORED THE MOST GOALS OF ANY PLAYER IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE.

For that alone I cannot rate Berbatov highly enough.

Sorry you are overrating him terribly there. For every great game he has, he has at least as many games where he is virtually anonymous. He has a habit of going missing and not working hard enough.

Fergie's players work their bollox off, even the best like Cantona and Scholes

Actually the bit in CAPITALS is at least grammatically incorrect as Tevez scored an equal amount of goals as Berbatov in the Premier League. So its the MOST GOALS BY ANY PLAYER (except Tevez).

I consider Berbatov overrated by you but not in general by Ferguson who I think is looking beyond mere statistics.

As for Ferguson's mismanagement, would Berbatov have been treated much differently at another big named club? Well yes, he would have been dumped out of the club back to Spurs or Leverkusen a long time ago. So again arguably Ferguson hasn't mismanaged him but stuck by faithfully.

Gramatically? I believe you mean contextually.

You can split hairs as much you want, Berbatov was still the top scorer of the league last year - a very important fact you desperately try to sell short here.

Yeah you're right the fact that he was joint top scorer in the League is irrelevant. It does seem to be thing you cling onto however.

What is relevant though is that he lost his place in the line up back in February last year and doesn't look anywhere near barring the odd game here and there of breaking back in.

OP is right to an extent, in particular this weekend I reckon he would've been a better option than Welbeck for all his quality. He has the best touch and hold play in our squad, should've started or at least come on before an off form Chicharito.

Hope he stays a while yet but when he leaves there will be a lot of 'what ifs' surrounding Berba and his remarkable talent. Not for the first time Ferguson has held a top quality striker back, reigned him in from going onto great individual achievements at a smaller club and is able to do so because of United's stature and their desire to play here. We are super lucky that he is still happy to stay here this season to be honest.

Berbatov's omissions have always been more to do with tactics than his quality. The man oozes natural skill and I appreciate watching that, it's a shame he's never fitted in with our style of play but to lazily claim his lack of playing time must make him shit is ridiculous.

Wouldn't get into the starting 11 of other big clubs? Fuck me sideways
