Corners
So how many goals are we going to get from corners next season now Young is here? I'm going for 38.
In seriousness, do we expect that to improve now? Will he be taking them do you reckon? Is it the delivery or our crap movement? |

He should take them. Our delivery the last couple of seasons has been awful most of the time. With Young swinging them in, we should be able to score at least 1 more goal from corners this season.

Nani's weak area is his corner taking, so Young coming should help. It doesn't change the fact that since Ronaldo left we only really have Vidic who attacks a ball in the air with his head from decent corners. We're a team mainly of short arses and the taller ones can't head the ball particularly well. Fletcher's generally good for a couple of headers a season, so is Berbatov, Hernandez in general play, but he's generally tightly marked on set pieces, but Rooney isn't given much space in the box when we have a corner. We also don't have the option of playing the ball out to Scholes on the edge of the box any longer.
Players which I can't recall ever doing anything with their head: Nani, Anderson, Valencia, Carrick, the twins, Evra, Evans. |

Anyway our only real threat at corners is Vidic and his goal scoring has gone 06/07 - 4 07/08 - 1 08/09 - 7 09/10 - 1 10/11 - 5 So he's going to have another shit season next year

it is , but with a shite delivery you have no chance of scoring.
If the delivery is excellent then your chance of scoring must increase greatly. Some of Uniteds corners over the last season or 2 were nothing short of awful. If the delivery of a dead ball from a corner is improved then we can be more dangerous in that particular set piece. We have good "in the air " players in the team. I cant honestly say I remember Young takling a corner but hopefully he has a decent peg on him to be whipping in a few testing crosses. |

You're saying crossing is overrated as well because Barca don't do it much? |

It's not like it's impossible to play good football and also be good at set pieces, one doesn't take away from the other. I don't think anybody's saying United should rely on set pieces to win titles, but if they can get you 5 - 10 extra goals each season and those goals get you some extra points, why not take advantage of that? Being rubbish at corners because it's not particularly fashionable to score from corners is just crazy. |

We shouldn't try to emulate Barcelona, if we can have a bonus of effective corners we will be far more likely to beat them than we are now. Mourinho's Chelsea was particularly good at set pieces from what I remember, so they managed to get by even when things weren't going their way. |

Really really embarrassing post.
I read somewhere that the accuracy needed for a successful corner is so hard, and that's why I imagine every top team think they're shit at corners. To be able to clear the first head and yet deliver it low enough to put in a dangerous ball is very very hard. Won't expect too much next year. |

Knowing our luck, most of our corners will be won whilst Young is off the pitch. The delivery will defo improve. You can see Young works on them.
Of course anything is better than hitting the first man. In fact I think we were finding new ways to fcuk up all our set pieces last season. |

I think Young will at least improve the delivery but our movement also has to improve. No one seems to make decoy runs and its just all so static. Ronaldos runs were fantastic in bringing markers out, and creating space for Vidic to run into (not to mention the ones he got on the end of himself). No-one seems to do it since he left. |

Come on, we don't play them every week so why not make the most of our corners in other games. We usually get so many of them and we hardly ever take advantage of them, now we have a corner taker we should utilize it and play to our strength. |
