Could Scholesy call it a day at end of season?

IF Utd win the CL and the Premiership its possible Scholesy might bow out at the top? You never can tell whats going on in that ginger noggin of his.Has he given any recent indication of how long he might like to keep playing.Considering he had that long spell out with the eye problem he might still have the hunger for another campaign but he could just as easy call it a day if he played in and won a champions league final. When is his present contract up? The end of next season? He didn't play great against Arsenal but he has been superb in the vast majority of the games he's played in and would leave a massive hole even with all the talent we currently have in midfield .

I believe that Scholsey, Giggsy and Gazza will continue to play for the club as long as they are wanted, regardless of how successful we are this season.

As much as I love him as a Red, I'd like to see him have a season at Oldham.

I hope not, hes got another good season or two in him. Though it wouldnt surprise me as Scholes seems to be the sort of person who would go out on top. My guess is when he does retire you will never here from him much.

Giggs and Gazza Id agree with but Scholesy has always been a bit different. Its not that hard to imagine him either quietly retiring altogether or slipping down to Oldham for a season.

He could call it a day, but he wont. I can see:
  • Scholes playing for at least 2 more years
  • Giggs playing for at least 1 more year
  • Neville playing for at least 2 more years

He won´t retire before the end of his contract. He has a season or two of football in him anyway.

I don't think so, no. I reckon he'll be here in a coaching capacity when his body gives up, which isn't for 2 seasons yet. Ferguson should stop relying on him and know when to use him better.

As long as there are younger players to compete with them for places, it'd be ok if they stayed for at least 2 seasons. It would have been different if their competitors were 3-4 years younger than them. Luckily SAF always plans for the future and keeps us from turning into the likes of Milan.

No way.

He has at least a season more in him.

I cannot Imagine United without Scholes ,Giggs and Neville.

I hope that even when they call it a day, they all would still be just sitting on the United bench in the kits just to be there.

He decided to quit playing for England so it is possible that he will make a similarly unexpected decision and make a final move to Oldham for a season or two. It is very difficult to predict how things will develop in central midfield but it is not unreasonable to assume that Anderson will the main man in the near future; that might come as early as next season.

Some players want to play. Others are prepared to sit on the bench for long spells. Anyone know which category Paul fits in? He's been out injured for months but I'm struggling to remember times when he's been fit yet not in the side.

As for the massive hole his departure would create, I don't think that's the case. The strange thing about our 5 central midfield players this season is they have almost been on a par with each other. Last season Scholes was hugely influential but this season he's just an option, with strengths and weaknesses, more suited to some games than others. Anderson played at Arsenal and at Liverpool, looking comfortable at that level.

Scholes will stay until Anderson matures into a player that Fergie believes he cannot leave out. At the moment, Scholes is the one that makes space for himself and finds space for others. Anderson had pinged a couple of decent long balls around and once he gets the maturity and consistency then I reckon Paul will head off up the A62 for a final season at Boundary Park.

Scholes = World class midfielder with vast experience. No Scholes = massive hole.I am not saying that Anderson can't fill that hole in the long run but I think Scholseys part in this season should not be underestimated.

I believe Scholesey will be play a major role for at least 3 years with us. He has never been a fast player or utilized his strength. So despite his age, he has not much pace to lose. His style of play reminds me of Teddy, which is based on intelligence, reading of the game and making the game look simple. Hence, I reckon he will be around for many year to come. Love live the Ginger Prince.

Its true that he had a bad first half against Le Arse, but tell me which one of our players played well in the first 45 minutes ??? He'll be back at his brillina best against Blackburn. I tip him to rifle in a goal or two against Fridel over the weekend. Just wait and see

Two more seasons ahead of him... everything depends on his health.

If Solskjaer's leg was healthy, he would play also another two years, or even more.

I would say UP to 2 years for each of those
If they are still good enough then time doesnt matter
But I guess finances get taken into account
They are senior players on senior wages
Would you keep players on those wages knowing that they are only going to play a bit part in the first team
Footballing head says yes
Financial head says no
I hope they are good enough to play for a few years yet

Has he showed a desire to retire? You know the answer mate. Even not playing at his best sometimes he is gonna stay two more seasons at least.

Definitely not. There will be none of this go out at the top bullshit. Players like him and Giggsy love playing too much to just retire now that theyve won the champions league and premiership. they have too much hunger to win even more trophies.

No one can say for sure how long he will carry on except the man himself.I am just guessing that Scholesy as a man has always shied away from publicity and being the centre of attention. Therefore it stands to reason that rather than everyone knowing when his last match for Utd will be(and the focus that would bring on him) he might at some stage before the end of a contract announce his retirement.Just because he can play for another two seasons doesn't mean he will.He could have played on for England but chose not to.

Scholes might stay one more season in reduced capacity to continue helping Carrick, Anderson, Fletcher and Hargreaves develop but I don't see him playing for United after that.

I can just see him going on until one day Fergie takes him aside and says "Look Paul, I don't think you've quite got it anymore". Then he'd probably just drive home, pick up the kids on the way, tell his wife when he gets in and she'd just say "That's nice, could you peel the carrots?"

Then one day a few years down the line, one of his grandkids will be sat on his lap being regaled with stories of his time as a footballer, and how he always refused to learn how to tackle.

Dunno. Doubt it.

I reckon Scholes will be the first of the three to hang up his boots though.

It seems hard to imagine life beyond Scholes. He's always been one of my real favourites. I love the guy's demeanour; so unassuming and yet so resolute. Quite simply the man for all seasons.

I'm brand new here, just been promoted. Can't quite take it in actually. So Hi to all!

hmmm, I honestly think he'd be the last of the three ...

still I dread the time when there'll be no more Scholes, Giggs and Neville playing for United. I've practically grown up watching them play week in week out.
