that was probably his most noticable moment as United's assistant manager.
Pretty much sums up how important he is

Mike's greatest talent is his unflinching ability to agree with everything Sir Alex says and does.

Fergie : "We don't need a midfielder do we Mike?"
Phelan : "The midfields the best it's ever been boss, we should buy 3 more strikers though."

Fergie : "I'm going to play Evra in 60 games this season Mike"
Phelan : "I think he can do 70 without any problems boss"

Fergie: "I'm thinking of rotating keepers every game Mike"
Phelan: "Great idea...it'll definitely help build confidence. We should get John O'shea back just in case one of them gets injured."

SAF: "Mike, how long do you reckon I can keep playing Giggsy and Scholesy?"

Phelan: "Not sure boss, but they look as good as ever so I'd say with confidence we can get atleast 3 more years out of them.

...

oh and boss, should I call Gary incase Rafael gets injured? I hear he's injury free and I think the time off might really have helped him regain his best form."

Okay what the hell happened?

Was that Dortmund against City game an eye opener to Mike and SAF?

We all of a sudden play pressing, play fast and don't go over the wings all the time.

Looks like Mike took some good notes from that game.

Hehe you never know but I felt if Mike gets all the blame when our tactics are shit he should at least get some praise when our tactics are improving.

Would be a bit unfair to blame him for the bad things but not praise him for the good things, but well that has never really stopped anyone from doing though.

Phelan came over to defend Sir Alex against Di Matteo and his assistant manager. It was actually funny.

Maybe Mike's completely unassuming and pathetic on the outside, but actually a deadly stealth fighter, secretely trained in Muay Thai or something.

Any idea what all that was about? It seemed like SAF was defending the forth officials honour at one point.

He locked Fergie in a broom cupboard while he handed in the team-sheet, then hid Anderson, Cleverley and Fletch in a hollowed out Coke dispensing machine.

Lies!

Anderson would never fit into a hollowed out Coke dispensing machine.

We were soo poor even SAF came out of the dugout to sort the defence out.

Do we now need a coach to help Phelan to do his job!!!

Phelans job is to sit on the bench and look like a fat cat in short pants, I thought we have already established that.

Phelan' Fine, says Robin

quote from official site today
“I have to thank my team-mates, the manager and coaches,” he said. “Rene Meulensteen and Mike Phelan are doing a fantastic job, then you have the manager with his speeches, which get us ready for the games. It’s just different class and I love it."

RVP's clearly a gooner plant trying to destroy the club from the inside out. First he scores goals so it makes his signing and love of the club believable, then he tries to instill confidence in Mike fucking Phelan. Burn the Heretic!!

The area which Fergie lacked was tactics. Before Mike did Fergie make as many weird team selections?

SAF's always made inexplicable team selections, to be fair.

I'm not sure about the tactical influence he'll have. I mean, he'll chime in and give his opinion, but at the end of the day it's on Fergie's shoulders. Phelan will be on the training ground telling players to do things differently. For example he'll tell Rafael and Valencia how to play better with each other, giving guidance in that form, but I don't think he has much tactical influence as people like to blame him for.

QUeiroz influence on tactics was evident. If Phelan just coaches the players then is he just implementing fergies tactics and requests? A glorified fitness coach. Run here, do that, etc. Or does he talk with players and discuss how they respond in games due to styles of play etc..

I think he originally considered City, for the money, but that ugly twat Platt scared his inner child, who told him to come here.

Yeah Quieroz did, but I think it was important he did, and easier, considering we were in a huge rut at the time. We'd signed Veron, and didn't know how to use him. Scholes had been pushed up field, and was then out of form, and we had Forlan (I'll say no more there).

As things are, we're not actually doing that badly (but by no means particularly well), there is no need to radically change things. I imagine that when something isn't working within the team i.e. Scholes and Carrick in midfield not working, I imagine Phelan would try change their roles and how they affect the team, and relay that back to Fergie. He'd then make the changes (sometimes).

This is my interpretation of it anyway. Not saying it what is happens, but what I'd imagine is supposed to happen.
