Is fergie searching for a new cantona?

Just reading the rebel who would be king and it occurred to me that lord ferg could be looking for the new cantona, or has the desire to build his side around an untapped genius. I think that the berb was his first foray and he now seems to be attracted to child prodigies who haven't fulfilled their potential: obertan, maybe ben arfa.

My personal opinion is that we miss that bit of genius, a figure who elevates the team psychologically and as a team. Could we ever find another cantona?

Or ami drunk and am overanalysing? Fuck I miss eric.

Yes, but it just struck a chord. Fergus loves a maverick genius. No functional powerful strikers. He wants something else. Fuck I miss eric.

Ronaldo was for 3-4 years close, but now is gone...believe me to compare anyone with Cantona is a blastfemy...

It's amazing how he transformed the team and club. I'm not sure something similar could ever happen again.

Man Utd boss Ferguson: Berbatov so much like Cantona | Premiership News | tribalfootball.com

Quote:
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has happily compared Dimitar Berbatov to legend Eric Cantona.

Ahead of today's clash at Liverpool, Ferguson said: "I've been pleased with [Dimitar] Berbatov's form this season, he's responded well to playing all the time. He reminds me of Eric Cantona, the way he takes his time when other players would hurry.

"And like Eric, although he can do the flicks and first time passes very well, he knows when a short, simple pass is the best option. I always used to say Eric was the best ever passer of the simple pass."

Rooney-Berbatov-Valencia

And you'd see how influential Berbatov would be.

Doubt so if the back four is fit, or at least 3/4 fit, VDS is in goal and the midfield two is Carrick/Fletcher, resorting to Anderson, Giggs and Scholes when chasing/closing a match.

Not if you played Carrick-Fletcher in the midfield behind them. They'd provide defensive stability.

According to our resident insiders on this board, the club is skint since it pulled out of the Ljajic deal.

It's funny cos it was a different era. You couldn't be surprised anymore, but I don't think ibrahimovic would have a similar effect.

No, not at all. Charisma is very different from arrogance.

Mourinho is the closest to Cantona right now that I can think of, though he's obviously not a player.

I think we are 2-3 players short, and no single player will complete this team. If we had someone like Ibra, we would still need a consistent lead the line striker, a center midfield playmaker, and may be a winger, depending on Obertan's development.

I'd like to see this, instead.

Capello's demanded that Rooney play high up and he's got some great results from him. I'd like to see him play as a front man for us, more. He and Berbatov both drop deep too often. People complained when he and Tevez did it, difference was we had Ronaldo gambling in behind defences then.

Well I grew up watching George Best and sorry but I will happily compare George Best to Cantona. I wish the kids today could have been at Old Trafford to see Bestie play, you have no idea what you missed. Watching old video footage of Best doesnt do justice to what he was like to watch live.

Fergie seems to think a lot about Diouf...and Ben Arfa apparently has been compared to Cantona.

Really I don't see anyone really making the impact he did.

You do realise that's what we have been playing whenever Berbatov and Rooney have been up front e.g. the beginning of the season.

Ridiculous you talk about the way Capello's played Rooney and then suggest he should be the furthest forward when he's clearly been behind a target man at International level under Capello.

no

I mean when we bought Eric, we were a very good side missing something. We're now in a different scenario. We've young kids with championship/champions league medals..

They can look up to scholes/neville and Giggs who will have learnt a lot from Eric

I just think if we had our defenders fit, we'd be top of the table now and therefore we've evolved to a healthy state where we can rotate and find a good level of confidence throughout the team

I think we've a lot of quality in the squad BUT we have to be careful and got get too sentimental during the transition of replacing Scholes/Giggs. We could have giggs say for another 3 seasons but what if we missed out on the new giggs to accomodate the old?

Most people can spot the questions a mile off. Clearly we need to get more out of Dimitar.

Watching the video, I had thought the same thing. Rooney has many of the same qualities, but lacks the focus. I hold out hope that Rooney will one day show up on a regular basis with that focus.

The one at the beginning and end is called Surface of the Sun from the Sunshine soundtrack. The one in the middle is from the same soundtrack I believe, but I'm not sure what it's called.

Rooney has a fucking long way to go to deserve to be mentioned in a thread about Cantona.

No not really considering people are saying he could be, not that he is this era's Cantona.

Plus it's quite a silly statement when you think Berbatov has been mentioned in this thread who has done far less for United than Rooney so far, yet you come out with this "doesn't deserve to be mentioned" shit for Rooney.
