Football intellectuals John Barnes and Tony Cascarino "Giggs is shite"
http://www.goal.com/en/news/1717/edi...ecry-pfa-award
Giggs winning the PFA award threw indifferent opinions from some quarters but cannot figure out how their premature ejalucation on Gerrard can be brought in to the equation. Giggs was certainly a better better option than Stevie G. |

Votes should be at the end of the season
Gerrard aint the best player this season though John Barnes is just pissed, the last 20 seasons he's predicted "this'll be Liverpool's year", he probably got a little ahead of himself and thought he might actually get it right this time |

No, nothing they said about Giggs was controversial. And they were spot on about Torres
Not mentioning Vidic at all as one of the alternative winners on the other hand, is stupid. But this stood out for me: Quote:

unfortunately cascarino is all too real. a complete fucking eejit whos "expert" opinion of football is invariably utter shite. "I have seen enough of Patrice Evra in the french league to know that he will never make it in English football" is one of his gems. total gobshite and not to be taken seriously

He wrote a controversial autobiography around 2000 which has helped him get lots of media work with the likes of The Times, Talksport, Sky Sports, The Sunday Mirror etc.

![]() "In reality Steven has been the best player in the Premier League this season and deserved the award. He continues to drive Liverpool forward year-on-year and while Giggs has performed well, he has only made 12 Premier League starts for United which suggests he is not even first choice at Old Trafford" yes, he continues to drive liverpool forward a trophyless season year-on-year |

If anyone deserves the award it's Vidic. He's Been our best player this season.
They must also be joking with the comments about Van der Sar, he's one of the best kicking goalkeepers in the league. If anything, out of the keepers from the top 4 Reina is the most prone to "shanking the ball" as they put it. |

By pure head logic, it has to be Vidic. By far the most consistent and impressive player in any team bar none...
But, I certainly, do not find anything wrong with Giggs getting it. He's been crucial to us in many ways this season. If at all, they should have had a special award for Giggs, though. A life-time achievement award for "current" players, which would be awarded only so rarely when a Giggs-like phenomenon comes to be. |

So you're saying it actually takes the last few months of last season into account too? |

I don`t think anyone has any trouble admitting that Ryan Giggs has not been the best player in the Premiership this season.
But, at the same time, everyone will agree that he is one of the very best players ever in the Premiership and a fantastic ambassador for the game. The most bitter scouser would admit that he is deserving of some personal accolade, after all he has achieved and the way he conducts himself. So when an award like this comes his way- despite him being a low-profile person, who hasn`t asked for this award in any other way than giving his all in 800 games for his club- then you keep quiet and you congratulate him for his fantastic achievments not only this year, but in the past 17 or so years. Imagine Paolo Maldini winning the FIFA Player of the Year award. I for one, would think that he deserved it and that it was a good person to give it to. Would I think: "Others have been better this year, he received that out of sentiment." - Sure I would, but I`d keep it to myself. There is a time for raising a discussion about the basis for these awards, and there is a time not to. This past week has is absolutely an example of the latter. So it just sounds extremely bitter when fans of our opponents start with this stuff days after Giggsy wins his award. The better thing to do would be to keep your thoughts to yourself, and appreciate that one of the games finest ambassadors is making the most of the twilight years of his career and congratulate him for this long-awaited indiviual recognition. I can honestly say, that if Gerrard goes on to play as long as Giggsy has, and he at that time picks up this award (if he hasn`t already), I`ll be able to say; "Well done, you deserved that" without needing to spill my guts about some other player having a better season. |

the voting takes place early in the year. at that time players were looking at a footballer who had just broken the all time appearance record for united. he had won a double in the previous season which all comes into a voters thinking when they come to vote in jan or whenever it is they vote. Giggs was an obvious candidate. if it was voted tomorrow giggs would still be a candidate.

The reason why Gerrard didn't get in the running is obvious. As a habitual diver he has tried to get too many of his fellow pros booked or sent off; this is hardly conducive to persuading those same people to vote for you.
