Personally, its best if he goes on loan, he needs the games to develop. If he goes, I really think he (aswell as Hull) could be the surprise package of the season...

Campbell Staying - Berbatov Deal Off Then?

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Hull City's worst fears: he won't allow Frazier Campbell to return to the Tigers on loan. The Huddersfield-born striker will spend next season at Old Trafford.

Now, it's good news, on one hand. Another talented young player looks set to receive the opportunity to step up the plate and prove his potential. And he's got loads of it: pace, skill, eye for goal, everything.

But currently we have five strikers. Louis Saha's departure is still not closer, as there are only vague rumours about Sunderland. We don't know anything about Manucho who hasn't been granted a work permit yet and there is Rooney and Tevez of course.

Could it mean that the Berbatov deal is off or that Fergie is not confident of landing the Bulgarian? The season is only a week away yet the squad's only glaring weakness has not been adressed yet.

I'm not panicking though: this is the side that's won a magical Double and there are no doubts about whether they are competent enough. The problem is that it's clear we need a different type of striker to the ones we already possess. Saha should be great but with his injury record we can't count on him. Manucho is an unkown quantity while Campbell, Rooney and Tevez are both quick little skilful players with very little aerial threat.

Berbatov would fit the bill perfectly and that's nothing new to anyone, I'm sure. But does Campbell's retaining mean we have given up on him? Or is it nothing else but an opportunity for a very talented young player? We'll see.
The kid's got potential, but I think we need a striker that can step up to the plate on day one. We need a Berbatov, Huntelaar, Benzema.

Next season we will want 4 strikers.
Campbell will stay unless the following both happen:
1) Manucho gets his permit
2) We sign another striker
If we do both, we will have 5 strikers, and it would be best to loan him out.
If either fails then he needs to be there as our fourth. If both fail I think we will be seriously light and I'd be worried. If we do get Manucho but no other then we will be taking a big gamble. If we get other but no Manucho, so long as the other is of real quality Campbell should be fine as fourth choice.

I quite like Campbell, I think he may benefit more personally from going on loan but he may receive as much benefit if he develops to the super sub Ole role using his pace late in games to get at defences, staying with us is a bigger gamble for him though for small gain in benefits paired with much more risk as oppposed to a loan .

That article posted by Jacoplane sums up some of the concerns that I have. We have a very strong squad but you cant help but feel in the back of your mind that something is not quite right. I hope its all sorted before the season starts.
