Gary Neville to play next season

Neville must be patient
Red Devils skipper may not be risked

Gary Neville admits that he may have to wait until next season before returning to the Manchester United first team.
The defender has not featured for the Red Devils for over a year and is aware that he will now face a battle to win back his place in the side.
He has spent the last few weeks building up his fitness for the reserves, but feels that he is still not quite ready to be thrown back into competitive action.
Even when he does regain full match sharpness, with United still chasing glory both at home and abroad, the England international realises that Sir Alex Ferguson may not want to gamble on breaking up a settled squad which has performed so impressively without their skipper.

"I've played three times for the reserves since the turn of the year and this is the longest run I've been on in terms of training and playing games," Neville told Manchester United Radio.
"It's going to take time to get back to full match fitness after being out for so long.
"I'm probably a little bit away from first-team sharpness but the only way I'll get that is by continuing to train with the first team.
"Hopefully I'll get a game somewhere but that could prove to be difficult with the significance of the matches we have over the next few weeks. I just have to hope and pray that I get my chance at some point.
"Usually when you're coming back from injury there's an opportunity to throw you back into the side, maybe in one of the cup competitions, but every game's so important now."

We will have probably signed someone else by then.

I've got to be honest, things aren't looking to hopeful for Red Nev.

the only way I can see him getting some games is if we wrap up the premiership title with 2 to 3 games to go in the season.

Yup. Unless we manage to score a shitload in the first-half of one of our remaining games.

Either that or, God forbid, Wes picks up an injury.

He won't play for us again.

It's been on the cards for ages now.

As soon as i saw he didnt even make the bench for the Bolton game you could see that he wouldnt.

Even if he does play next season i cant see him being anywhere near good enough to be our number 1 number 2 () so we could definately do with bringing someone in.

Im not sure Simpson will be good enough....

Of course he will. His last run-out for the reserves was a huge improvement on the one before that. He's definitely getting there. But it might not be until next season before he starts a competitive game.

Neville will play again. The main point of the article is that he might not be risked this season but that he is recovering well. Next season, he will likely take part in pre season and be ready for the full season.

And when he does play, he'll be fucking quality still.

For this season, yeah I agree with you. But Neville's a fighter and with a good pre-season he'll back next season I believe.

I'm willing to have a bet that Gary Neville will never play a competitive match for us again. The loser gives £5 to the Charity of their choice.

Anyone ?

Hmmm you see i generally agree with you but dont you think he will be given even 1 minute of 1 game just as a token gesture if he genuinely can't come back propperly?

I'll take you on that bet Sammy Boy. I'll even do you one better. He plays, you give 5 pounds to my charity, and if he don't play, I give $25 (canadian dollars which is equivalent to 10 pounds to your charity.

True but slightly different circumstances. Ole had come back after career threatening injuries to score some goals and get a few more games whereas Nevill has gone from a regular to never playing again.

Plus there's then the fact that Neville is club captain and he's been here forever....

Just to be clear, you're not talking about just this season, are you? You mean forever, right?

Why?

He's barely over 30, he's kept himself in good physical shape throughout his career. He's being eased back to fitness. He can bounce back.

Make it £50 and you pay me when he plays and it's a deal.

Well if you recall at the time of the injury he came in for a bit of stick about his defending and people questioning if he was past it or not. So one could argue he was already in a state of decline and then over a year out with injuries on top of that, plus his age (33?) makes it seem very unlikely too me.

Why the feck would he never play for us again? It's not like he was shit before he got injured, or he's particularly old for a defender. Can't see any reason he doesn't have a couple more season in him.
