Would that instantly put him greater than Giggs? Or are we past that time?
I do think that we're past that time. You have to go into a lot more depth than that when comparing players. Club performances should be held in a much higher regard than international performances.

Why?

Giggs has had the priviledge of playing for Manchester United, Bale plays for Tottenham. The international tournaments provide a more level field.

I'm talking about when we're looking back on their careers and judging them as players then. I don't think that there's anything wrong with comparing them at club level. They both play at the same level, and I doubt that Bale will remain at Tottenham for the remainder of his career. As long as he remains at a top club, there's no reason to say that he can't be compared to Giggs.

I don't think that international level offers anymore of a level playing field, considering they've played for Wales in different eras. It's yet to be seen what the Wales team will look like over the next few years, but it could be a lot better or worse than the one that Giggs played in.

I was 20 years old in 1991 Dominant and can remember watching Giggs play very well.

You on the other hand where only 13 years old at the time, yet you seem to think I should not be making any comments because I haven't seen him play.

I guess on the other hand you must have very clear memories, after all you were 13 years old.

Indeed.

Giggs could change direction with the ball whilst running at an incredible pace and I don't think I've seen any player replicate it since. He used to turn defenders inside out. I believe Fergie was quoted as saying he left defenders with "twisted blood" and that pretty much sums it up. If it wasn't for the persistent hamstring problems at a key stage in his career, I think he'd be even more legendary than he already is.

Gareth Bale is very quick and very effective on his day, but he's nowhere near as skilfull as Giggs at any age.
Guys I was 20 years old when Giggsy started playing for us and I can honestly remember a lot and yes he was amazing, Its just that I also remember Ronaldo coming on for us on his debut at 17 years of age? and I had never seen such a young player have so much confidence in himself and his trickery,I had also never seen such a technically gifted 17 year old before including Giggs.

Its just my opinion surely I am entitled to it.

He did look incredibly good against Bolton, however he soon got a reputation as a show pony and/or got criticised for doing lots of step overs and little else.

I don't recall Giggs getting that sort of criticism, although it was two decades ago. All I can remember were the George Best comparisons.

Yes you are right about that.

Maybe my original post was misunderstood, I dont mean Ronaldo was better as in achieving more for United at that age, he just seemed to be a better player technically? at 17-18.

Again just my opinion

One thing is for sure, Bale should be a man united player one day. However, we're skint so it probably won't happen...

Giggs v Bale at similar ages?

That's easy...

Bale will be nowhere near as good as Giggs at the age of 38!

Yup, is Giggs some kind of Benjamin Button?! Played bloody 90 minutes today and looked better than Anderson would have..
