Giggs vs Phil Neal

Was in a discussion with a Liverpool supporter last night. Does anyone know how many medals has Phil Neal won? I thought Giggs has more medals than anyone else by now in all competitions, but my friend insisted that Phil Neal is still ahead by one, and in any case has more European Cups.

I reckon the European Cup bit is true, but I'm fairly sure Giggs is ahead in terms of total medals.

Anyone know? i can't be arsed to google.

Four European Cups, Eight league titles. Not sure about Fa Cups, League cups, or EUFA cups. Will check.

Neal has 7 league titles, 4 European Cups, 1 UEFA Cup, 5 Charity Shield, 4 League Cups and 1 European Super Cup. If I count correctly, that makes it 22 titles.

Giggs has 10 league titles, 2 European Cups, 6 Charity Shield, 2 League Cups, 1 European Super Cup, 1 Intercontinental Cup and 4 FA-cups. That makes it 26.

Note that Neal don't have a FA-cup

Does not make much difference in this case, but only Liverpool and Arsenal fans count the Charity shield as a proper trophy.

So Giggs > Neal in everything except European Cups and League Cups.

Maybe that's why he's still playing on

Neal's Anfield career lasted 11 years (1974-1985). The only major trophy he never won was the FA Cup. The year after he left, Liverpool beat Everton 3-1 in the FA Cup final...............The bastards.

So let's cut this down to the ones that matter:

Phil Neal:
Honours: 4 European Cups, 8 League Championships = 12

Ryan Giggs :
Honours: 2 European Cups, 10 League Championships, 4 F.A Cups = 16

So still Giggs > Neal, however you look at it.

Phil Neal demanded £3500 from the Observer for his thoughts on the Heysel tragedy.

Giggs >>>> Neal in every way.

Surely to God this can't be true...... Surely nobody could be that much of an unprincipled twat.......

One thing that is true, however, is that many years ago he took over at Cardiff City as manager, made a lot of noise about how he was going to steer the club to glory then immediately fecked off to Man City to be assistant manager to (I believe) Steve Coppell. No doubt somebody who knows more about the Bluebirds than I do will come on and confirm, but I'm sure he didn't even take charge for one competitive match and I believe he was only in charge a matter of a day or two before he decided that the grass was greener at Maine Road.

You can look it up. The Observer were doing a piece on the anniversary of Heysel and asked Phil Neal for his thoughts as he was famous for crying with the emotion of the tragedy. He replied that they would have to pay him to talk as the journalist in question would be making money off his words.

He got a shock when the Observer refused his demand and instead revealed it in an article.

Giggs > Neal

Here you go:

I'd rather forget that night. It was an ordeal. But, Jamie, why should I help you out? I'm helping you pay your mortgage [by talking to you about Heysel]. When people ask me for my view, they usually have to pay for it. You're asking for my help for nothing. To pay your mortgage, Jamie. I mean, what do you want from me?

I just thought that as the captain of Liverpool football club on that night at Heysel it would be good to hear your view?

Yes but what do you want from me? If I talk to you for a few minutes, then I'm helping you pay your mortgage and what am I getting in return? Do you know what I mean?

Well, I have been to Italy and talked with some of the families of the victims and they say that the trophy should be given back by Juventus to commemorate what happened.

About Juventus? Why are you asking me? Why are you asking someone on the Liverpool side? Juventus made amends very soon. Ask them ... Jamie I'm helping you pay your mortgage. People who want my views pay.

I'm sorry, but everyone else I have spoken to has ...

Great. So you've spoken to people, you've got your views. You've got your Liverpool view, but if you want mine for free, well people pay for them.

He's probably the one who spurred the team on to play the Game during that time in the dressing room, knowing full well there were Juv fans dying or dead, and some of the players have not wanted to play in view of the disaster!

So it's true... I had hoped that nobody would stoop this low and I am trying not to let my disappointment get the better of me.. I can't help but think that John Lennon would have had this type of person in mind when he wrote "Crippled Inside".
