Greatest loss to a United side
Would it be George Best or Ronaldo ,as comparison's go they were both all ways compaired with each other ,but I feel there the comparisons end as I think the majority of fans wont hold Ronaldo in such a legendary status as Best ,but who was the most influential in there respective United sides

I never saw Bestie play and all I have is a few clips of the great man and the grapevine. He was simply outstanding, at least in the few clips I have of him.
However, having seen Ronaldo play, I have to say the last two years have been nothing short of magical, so he probably wins that aspect. On overall likeability, Ronaldo is a cnut whilst Georgie boy did cunts, so Georgie comes out on top. |

As KingEric says, there have been loads of players who have seemed irreplacable but when they've gone we've survived, and even got better - Robson, Van Nistelrooy, Keane....
One of the biggest gaps left when a player left during my lifetime was when Schmeichel left. Took us a very long time to find a replacement. |

We'll miss Ronaldo (if he indeed leave, which I'm sure he won't, could have been a salary increase bluff),
but then again, even with no additional wonderkid, we won't do too badly, I remember we win the leaque without him, without Beckham, Without Ruud, and without Keane times before. |

They are different situations. Best faded away gradually by becoming unreliable. When Ronaldo leaves it'll be a clean break.
I think Best was more influential because the team was more reliant on him. Law and Charlton were getting old and the rest weren't that good compared to the current players. Best was going to be the player to keep United at the top. The current team is stronger and will remain in contention even if Ronaldo leaves. |

Just adding a player not mentioned here Irwin - took us an age to find a decent left back to take over from him. Providing both consistency and attacking threat. Had a few false hopes with John 'beckenbauer' O'Shea, Mikky Silvest and Judas but finally SAF found Evra.

probably only the likes of topper and BR are the only ones old enough to make a valid judgement on this.

In my time, The Great Dane has got to be the most influential loss.
Strategically, though, we could never afford to be without a leader in defence (Bruce, Stam, Rio). Losing Becks also took some time sorting out (waiting for Ronnie). Honestly, I think we can recover without Ronaldo, but some other players will have to grow. Best is hard to judge, as we were equally dependent on Law and Charlton, and they all faded simultaneously. Duncan Edwards is an obvious candidate, though hard to tell as we lost 9 or 10 other players in the same instant. |

Such different times/circumstance that it's hard to even really compare. The Best that left us was in trouble and we'd had plenty of warning. The team was in trouble as well, and was in trouble really from the day it won the European Cup. Of course, I was young enough then to always harbour the faint hope that Best was going to come back and be great again - just as every year I thought we were in with a chance of the title until it became mathematically impossible (actually that idea wasn't something I got past until 93
)Ronaldo's in his prime and the team are strong - and should get even better next year, which is why the thought of losing him now hurts even more, I wanted to see "that" team. |
