We were outplayed by City without doubt.

The Liverpool one though, it seriously is amazing how they won that match 4 fucking 1. Not going to say they didn't deserve to win because they took any chances they got and we didn't but there is no way they outplayed and outclassed us, we gifted them the first two goals, third was just stupid from Vidic too which saw him get sent off and a great freekick, then the fourth was just a goal kick that bounced the whole way through. I'm still baffled by the scoreline.

Over the last three or four years in league fixtures at Anfield Liverpool have played far, far better than they did in the 4-1.

No one said it was their fault we got a player sent off, but the fact is that the sending off caused us to lose the game. Before that we were the better side, they only dominated when it ceased to be an even contest.

We were 1-0 down and they were good in that few moments before the red card. Most people conveniently forget what the red card was given for - a clear cut one on one which would have made it 2-0 to City in all likelihood.

It was mostly Torres and Gerrard. Especially Torres vs Vidic. Their defense was also good in the game after they conceded.

I wouldnt say either Ajax or Basle "outplayed" us. Athletic really did though.

If the definition for "outplayed" includes understrength teams losing gamed in mickey mouse competitions and/or group stages of the CL then yeah, I'd say it happens fairly frequently. Often against fairly poor opposition. Remember Michael Mifsud?

In terms of important league games, losing to City on the anniversary of the Munich disaster would be one of the more recent examples.

We were out classed by Real Madrid in the champions league back when Keane scored the own goal, Milan in 2005, Chelsea in Jose's first season, the 1-1 draw with Juve in 1999. but we got sweet revenge in Turin

Er, yes? If we'd snatched an equaliser with one of the late corners against Bilbao, would it suddenly mean they didn't outclass us? The whole rest of the game would suddenly have happened completely differently? Remember the 2005 FA cup final? There's another game involving late corners that we were outcassed in too...

I'm presuming this thread is referring to games where teams come to Old Trafford, and give United a bit of a footballing lesson on the day. City didn't do that. They spent over half the game on the back foot, and then profitted from United's complete unprofessionalism in playing with ten men.

The Liverpool 4-1 was similar. United had most of the game, but decided to gift wrap a mauling to the opposition with inexplicable errors in concentration. In neither of those games were we chasing shadows and looking generally second best as we did the other night.

Very few when we've had a full strength team out. Might be a lesson to be learnt somewhere there.

The worst display I've seen United put up at Old Trafford in recent seasons was the game against Chelsea when we lost to Drogba's offside goal, and probably the Premiership.

Edit: 1-0 loss to City on the anniversary of the Munich disaster few seasons back also come to mind.

I remember Fulham getting clapped off by the Stretford End after this one

BBC SPORT | Football | Premiership | Fulham stun Man Utd

In terms of being outplayed - I don't think any team (regardless of goals conceded) who outplayed us the way Bilbao did - but for De Gea you could be talking about a much larger scoreline

Ignore my post; we weren't dominated in any of those games.

That Chelsea one in 2004/5 was fairly comprhensive, from what I remember. My judgement might be a bit clouded by how poor we were in general that season, though.

You're missing the point of the thread. We didn't outplay and outclass Bayern in '99.
I'm not the one with red tinted specs here. We've had plenty of 4-1 wins that flattered us too.

Of course you can - Liverpool have made an art-form out of it in recent times.

Totally against the run of play. I'd love to have the be able to dig out the half time punditry from that match... might remind people of a few truths.

They were better than us second half, whether due to the red or not, but I don't think you can be the better team for half the match and then be said to have been comprehensively outclassed, however badly you do in the other half.

We simply weren't at the races at all that day. It's the second match that came to mind for me on reading the OP. And it was on my 21st birthday...

The other one was when Jose's champions twatted us in 2005. It was a dead rubber but they were just so much better than us, felt like like a real end of an era.

The 1-6 was the most freakish result I think I've ever seen in a football match, with 5 minutes to go City were timewasting, for fuck's sake. If Rio and De Gea hadn't gifted City a corner in the 90th minute in the stupidest way possible then nobody would even remember that match. If it conclusively proves how much better they are than us, as people love to say, then how come we've beaten them in the other two matches this season...

Edit: As an aside, am I the only person who pretty much loathes Anders Lindegaard purely for costing us the chance to get revenge on City? We were 3-1 up and cruising with ten men, and would surely have got 4 or 5 and banished the 6-1 shit forever, if he hadn't gifted City a second forcing us on the back-foot. It's irrational, sure, but I'll never forgive him for it.

Going back before 2000 (I think) that spanking we got off Newcastle, finishing up with Albert chipping Schmeicel was a tough watch. That was a home game, right?

EDIT: nope. Was at SJH.

In very few of those games have we been truly outclassed. It's more just that we've been playing teams who we should be much better than, and ended up being 2nd best.
It's like whenever we fail to beat a Bolton or a Blackburn - people always talk about some amazing performance from the opposition, but more often than not it just a case of a few sloppy moments, and not taking our chances.

That is a good call - there was a much bigger gap between the teams over the 90 minutes in that match than there was in the 6-1.

We obviously must've outclassed Spurs until the late Defoe goal, then.

Who is that in reply to? Not me I hope, as it sounds like you're agreeing with my point!

Here's another one for Snow & co - presumably if Rafael hadn't done the most inexplicable bit of dozing, and the linesman had done hi job properly for their second, then we wouldn't have been outclassed by Bilbao?
