He was rarely without both of them for any extended period of time, especially when he was still bedding into the team when he first moved here (which is what DDG is still doing).

We could have given Howard more time, Foster too. Hope the 2 lads get the same chance to bed in as the rest of our squad. It's a problem in the short term but both have the potential to be excellent keepers. The return of VDS would be a bit of a joke.

I would definitely have him back without hesitating. Not only would he still be one of the best goalkeepers in the league, but he could guide De Gea.

I'd welcome him with open arms but it'd be a terrible move for the long term confidence of the other keepers.Bringing back Scholes from retirement had a clear reason, the recurring injuries to midfielders.VDS' return would just plainly mean that both DDG and Lindegaard aren't good enough

DDG hasn't been nearly as bad as some have made out.
SAF's constant rotation of the keepers has fucked him up. No wonder his confidence is shot to pieces. |

This really. Why bring in young keepers, then say 'look, neither of you are good enough to displace a retired 40 year old, let's hope you both get better by training lots'.
Lindegaard's good enough, and De Gea's big problem for me is his lack of confidence and perhaps the language barrier. If he worked on the aerial side of his game he'd be more than ready to play. |

Scholes made sense, this wouldn't. The chances of alienating one of the two keepers here would just be too high, you would just be taking short term relief for more stress down the line.
Better off taking the 'pain' now and helping the keepers we got (two bloody good one's at that) get over their teething and then reap the benefits for years to come. |

Tough one. I love VDS so much that I would like him back for the rest of the season but that would kill the confidence of our two young keepers.
And VDS was simply amazing for us. It wasn't even about the shot stopping. Stopping shots is a tiny aspect of keeping. There are so many mid and lower table keepers that can stop shots well with reflexes. VDS' reflexes were on the decline when he came to us and let in some dodgy free kicks and angled shots (Kaka in the CL) But he hardly made mistakes. I remember a few bad rebounds and the howler last season agaisnt West Brom? But that's about it. The best thing about VDS was that big and physical sides didn't trouble him. We were also lights out on corners and high balls. Oh ya, he also played many games without Rio and or Vidic and did well like he always did. What a keeper. |
