Jordi Cruyff
Was just wondering what your original impression was when we first signed him, as a fan that is? I remember him vaugely for his later career at United, but I don't know how highly 'rated' he was when he first came.

He came just after Euro 96, along with Poborsky if memory serves me correctly. Clearly had talent and had been in the Dutch squad for that tournament. I always thought it was just a matter of time before he clicked into place at United but he never seemed to. He tried to lob Sullivan from the halfway line about 5 minutes before Beckham pulled it off but Jordi sliced it wide.

Was a good player, I liked the fact he didnt want to be compared with his father so just had JORDI. seemed like a nice guy too, where is he now ? I remember he went to Barcelona B, but not heard anything since.

Upon his departure from Español a return to England was mooted when Cruyff had a trial with Bolton Wanderers but Trotters manager Sam Allardyce decided against signing the Dutchman despite him having impressed in friendly matches. From 2004 to 2006, he was semi-retired, keeping fit with Barcelona's B squad and playing in some veteran matches. As for 2007-2008 season he still plays in Ukraine, with Metalurh Donetsk. He entered the fashion business, helping develop the Cruyff clothing brand.

It must be really difficult to be the son of one of the worlds greatest ever players. I mean of course it would be great but if you wanted to follow in his footsteps you would aways be compaired and have a level of expectation that would far exceed any normal young player.

I remember we signed 3 outfield players in the summer of Euro 96 (I think we also signed van de Gouw).
The 3 were: Karel Poborski - on the back of an excellent Euro 96 campaign Jordi Cruyff - Who had starred in a couple of European games against Newcastle and was drawing comparisons with his father. Ole Solskjiar - An unknown youngster. Who could guess which one would go on to become an OT legend? |

decent player. looked good in the Barcelona team with Stoichkov and Romario. came to us then and never really took off. was'nt a signing I remember anyone being very excited about and he left of his own accord the summer before we won the treble so his timing was a bit off. but never heard him complaining and scored a couple of crucial goals for us

Jordi had natural talent in terms of close control, could use both feet etc but nothing that could hurt opposing sides. Out of his depth at the big clubs like United and Barcelona but enough technical ability to be seen as the class player for a small team trying to avoid relegation. I suppose a bit like Kinkladze at Man City. |

Seemed to have promise
Had a reasonable but not brilliant run of games then got injured when he seemed to be getting somewhere Popular but never really seemed likely to make it at United in a big way Doubt he would have been a regular even without injuries |

He was the dutch Ji sung Park. Not really good enough for the first team, but very good cover. Problem is he was closer to Saha in terms of injuries and a lot of times when he was going to get his break, he ended up injured.
I liked him, thought he had good potential. I believed his best position was actually not upfront or on the wing, but behind the striker because he had really good vision. But obviously when he arrived we had Cantona, and then Sheringham and Yorke. |
