![]() David Gaskell - became the youngest player to ever play for United when he played in the 1956 Charity Shield at 16 years of age! John O'shea - Mr Reliable/Versatile. Provider of some magic moments in his time at United in which he accumulated almost 400 appearances for United. Gary Pallister - One of the best centre backs Fergie has had in his time at United. Quick, strong and can also play a bit. Kevin Moran - Over 200 caps for United, 70 for Ireland and was also capable of chipping in at the other end. With 21 goals for United Roger Byrne - Captain of the famous Busy Babes. 280 caps for United. Jesper Olsen - Providing the width on the left hand side is Jesper Olsen, with over 150 caps for United and 40 for his country. Ray Wilkins - staying on his feet in midfield is Ray Wilkins. 160 caps for United and Alongside Roy Keane, my midfield will not be bullied Roy Keane - Not much needed to be said about Keano. The most influential central midfielder during the club's most successful era. Not a lot that Keane couldn't do very well Andrei Kanchelskis - Width on the right hand side comes from the pacey Kanchelskis. Superb player for United during the start of the Premiership and scorer of a famous hat-trick against City Mark Hughes - Over 450 caps and 160 goals for United. One of the key men to propel United back to Domestic dominance at the start of the Premiership era. Denis Law - United's 2nd top scorer of all time, the King. |

![]() Schmeichel - Undoubtedly the greatest keeper United have had, and arguably one of the greatest ever. Quick off his line, agile and not scared to give the defence a bollocking. He had everything you could ask for in a keeper, and more. Also a goal threat, as Rotor Volgograd found out. Bonus points for having a dog in Coronation Street named after him, how many other keepers can say that? Jaap Stam - The most expensive defender in football when he signed for United. Even without a defensive partner who was his equal or close to it, United still managed a good defence with Stam in it. Was unfortunatley sold to Lazio, far too early - even by Fergies eventual admission. Brian Greenhoff - I'll admit, I've never seen him play as I'm too young. He was only known to me as his brother Jimmy also played for United. Partnered Martin Buchan in central defence, most famously in the 1977 FA Cup final, denying Liverpool The Treble (the actual treble that time around). Shay Brennan - A full back for United playing through the under Sir Matt Busby from 1957 to 1970. Made 359 appearances for United and scoring six goals. Won two league title during his time, and also the European Cup of 1968. Arthur Albiston - Another full back who made 485 appearances from 1974 to 1988 scoring six goals. He helped win three FA Cups along the way, and promotion from the second division. Norman Whiteside - A career cut cruelly short by injury at the age of 26, by which time he'd already left Old Trafford by two years. Became our youngest debutant at the age of sixteen. Something which had not happened since another legend by the name of Duncan Edwards took to the pitch almost thirty years before. He also became the clubs youngest ever goalscorer by the end of that season. Most memorable about Whiteside was his goal in the 1985 FA Cup final, his consistently great performances against Liverpool and Everton and his goal in the 1983 FA Cup final, setting another record as the youngest player to score in the FA Cup final. No occasion was too big for Norman, and I doubt this one will be either. Lou Macari - Made over 400 appearances from 1973 to 1984 scoring 98 goals. Also gave his name to, or at least owns a chippy near Old Trafford. Which I've heard isn't very nice. Willie Morgan - Spent seven years at United, from 1968 to 1975 making 296 appearances - which is more than the likes of Ronaldo, Vidic or Ruud have managed. A bit unfortunate for Morgan that he would have been constantly in the shadow of George Best, and later Steve Coppell. Also has a song named after him, the inspired 'Willie Morgan on the Wing'. Sammy McIlroy - 20th on the all time appearances list with 419 appearances and 74 goals. Notable for being the last of the Busby Babes, and drawing early comparisons to George Best. Although he was right footed, his best position seemed to be on the left of midfield. Andrew Cole - One half of on of the greatest strike partnerships that this club has seen. 275 games and 121 goals puts Andrew 17th on the all time goalscoring list. As for the Premier league, he's second only to Alan Shearer having taken only one penalty. Dwight Yorke - The other half of that strike partnership, Yorke scored 64 goals in 151 games, 30 of those goals coming in the treble winning season. Had what has been described as a telepathic understanding with Andrew Cole, as witnessed in the Nou Camp in 1998. Lee Martin - Scorer of the goal that reportedly saved Fergies career, although that is often denied by Bobby Charlton. Only made over 100 appearances for United and only spent one season as a regular in the team. To score an FA Cup winning goal isn't bad though, and give Fergie his first of many trophies. Tactics. I've selected Lou Macari in central midfield as he was a goal scoring midfielder, along side Norman Whiteside who chipped in with plenty of goals too. With Whiteside being the aggresive type, and Macari being full of energy, I wouldn't expect them to make it easy for any opposition player in the middle of the pitch. In the great United tradition though, their role would also consist of getting the ball out to the wings. In Sammy McIlroy and Willie Morgan there are two talented wingers who can hopefully get as many balls into the box for Yorke and Cole to get onto. Although Yorke and Cole don't really rely on others to create chances for them as they were quite capable of doing that for each other. Stam's pace and strength at the back would be a good enough match for any opposition forward, and even of they did beat him, they would have the Great Dane to get past. I would have my full backs support the wingers but not in the Evra-Rafael sense where they all but abandon defending. |

Line up for next match:
![]() TACTICS/PLAYSTYLE: 4-3-3. Ince and Butt getting stuck in, winning tackles and giving the opposition no time on the ball, Giles attempting to control the game, playing passes through to Pegg and Best who will exploit the space created by Tommy Taylor. PLAYER PROFILES: Ray Wood: Three time England international and title winning goalkeeper. Lost his place to Harry Gregg after the Northern Irishman transferred in for a world record fee for a goalkeeper, but with 208 appearences for Manchester United, a great servant to the club. Tony Dunne: Solid and dependable left-back. 535 appearences for United in more than a decade with the Red Devils. His honours with the club include an FA Cup win in 1963, title wins in 65 and 67 and the 1968 European Cup. Wes Brown: Versatile and athletic centre-back and United youth product who was a part of the treble team after making his senior debut in 1998. Sir Alex Ferguson said of Brown "without question [he is] the best natural defender this club has had for years". Despite regular injury problems, Brown managed over 360 apperances for United in a career which included 2 Champions League wins, an FA Cup win and numerous league titles. Rio Ferdinand: One of the best central defenders in the world at his peak, Ferdinand is a composed, intelligent reader of the game who combines blistering pace with brilliant positional sense. Over 380 appearences (and counting!) for United in a 10 year spell which included captaining United to the Champions League title in 2008, with Ferdinand imperious on the road to the final. Gary Neville: Fiercley loyal and competitive right-back, a superb crosser of the ball and a player with endless stamina. First choice for both Manchester United and England for over 10 years, Neville came through the youth system at United, going on to make 602 appearences and serving as captain for 5 years in a trophy laden career which included the 1999 treble. Paul Ince: United's key midfielder in the early 90's and part of the legendary double winning team of 1994. Ince was a tenacious and tough tackling midfield general with a powerful shot and the ability to play a pass. During his 281 appearences for United he formed partnerships with numerous midfielders including Mike Phelan, Brian McClair and Roy Keane, always performing well and collecting winners medals in the FA Cup, Premier League and European Cup Winners' Cup along the way. Nicky Butt: Solid and reliable defensive midfielder with a penchant for scoring crucial goals. Made his first-team debut in 1992 and went on to play 386 times for the club. Part of the treble winning side in 1999, Butt was often understudy to players such as Roy Keane and Paul Scholes, though he did his job admirably when called upon, playing the full 90 minutes in the 99 CL final triumph, as well as collecting 6 Premier League titles and 3 FA Cup winner's medals. Johnny Giles: A tough but skillful midfielder capable of running a match, Giles spent 6 years with Manchester United, making 115 appearences and playing a crucial role in winning the FA Cup in 1963. Voted by the FAI as the Republic of Ireland's greatest player of the last 50 years, Sir Matt Busby said of Giles: "Selling him to Leeds, not seeing his potential as a midfield player, was my greatest mistake in football". David Pegg: Prodigious left-wing talent who made his debut as a 17 year old in the 1952/53 season, a graceful ball-playing winger and accurate crosser of the ball, Pegg formed a lethal partnership with Tommy Taylor. Seen by many as the natural replacement for the legendary Tom Finney in the England setup, at the age of 22 Pegg had played 150 games for Manchester United, scoring 28 goals as well as appearing once for England. George Best: One of the most talented players to ever pull on the red shirt, combining perfect balance, blistering pace and an eye for goal, George Best had it all. As a part of United's famed Holy Trinity, Best propelled the club to it's first European triumph, scoring as United beat Benfica 4-1 at Wembley. He was also named Football Writer's Player of the Year and European Footballer of the Year as well as scoring a dazzling 179 goals in 470 appearences for the club. Tommy Taylor: Prolific striker signed from Barnsley for £29,999 in 1953. Taylor scored twice on his Man Utd debut as a 21 year old, scoring seven goals in 11 games in total in his first season with the club. Led United to league title triumphs in 1955/56 and 56/57, as well as scoring in the 1957 FA Cup final, which United lost. A striker of great quality, Taylor scored 131 goals in 191 games for Manchester United, as well as netting 16 times in just 19 England appearences. SUBSTITUTE: Brian Kidd: United youth product and a natural finisher, Kidd scored 70 goals in 266 appearences for the club, including a goal in the 1968 European Cup final. Following his playing career, Kidd moved on to coaching roles, returing to United in 1988 where he eventually became assisstant to Alex Ferguson and played a pivotal role in the development of 'Fergie's Fledglings'. |
