Manucho flies in today, a day late, due to the visa problem. He is expected to play the return leg against Rangers, here in Athens on Thursday.
Will keep you up to date with any further developments.

WORK PERMIT SITUATION :

I just did some digging on the situation with his permit...Angola (who are ranked 72nd in the FIFA rankings) have played a total of 16 matches since the world cup in 2006 (Manucho was not part of the WC squad). Manucho has played in 10 out of those 16 which means he has played in 62% (0r 63% for the really pedantic blokes out there) of the matches. If Angola play 3 matches in the ACN (guaranteed) plus the friendly today, then he would have played 70% of their matches. If they progress further and play 3 more matches (QF, SF and 3rd place/Final match) then he would have had played in 74% of the matches which is still insufficient for a work permit.

What is more likely than Angola making it to the finals, is that they reach the QF and then go out (making 4 matches in the CAN 2008) and he plays in the friendly on 26th March and the WC qualifiers on 30th May and 6th June which gives us a total of 18 caps out of a possible 24 which gets us to the magic figure of 75%. If he misses any of these matches, then we may have to wait till July or September depending on how many he misses.
Thats weird as feck. How a player like Benjani that plays for Zimbawe then got a work permit. How about Lua Lua that represents Congo and the list goes on... Even the Watford player from Sierra Leone that all we signed on a page to allow him to stay on England.

Manucho trained with his new team mates, here in Athens yesterday. He say's that he is very excited about his move to Utd. He is looking forward to playing for Panathinaikos this season, as they are a big team and will give him valuable experience, for when he finally gets to Utd.
Photos to hopefully follow!!!

I take it this weekend fixtures will come too soon for him?

Got a good selection of strikers at Pana, not sure if his selection will be automatic.

It will be within weeks. He'll add another dimension to their attack and score a bucketload of goals.

They play through the middle from what I saw vs. Rangers. Manucho is the type of player who will thrive from quality delivery from wide positions.

Manucho interview on arrival in Athens

Goncalves arrives in Athens
15 Feb 2008
Panathinaikos and Manchester United striker Manucho Goncalves arrived in Athens on Thursday (02/15/08).

"I am a striker and I want to score lots of goals so my club can achieve their objectives. Panathinaikos have a great coach and they are a challenge for me before my return to Manchester United," said the Angolan striker.

"Panathinaikos are a great team and I have plenty of time to get accustomed to my teammates and my coach. I am very happy about my performance with Angola in the African Cup of Nations, but at this time the only thing in my mind is Panathinaikos," added the 24 year old player.

When asked if he is ready to play for Panathinaikos he replied, "I want to help as soon as possible but that is up to my coach - if he uses me or not. I expect to score lots of goals for Panathinaikos."

Manucho, second best scorer in the African Cup of Nations 2008, will play for Panathinaikos until the end of the season, after he was borrowed from Manchester United that contracted him recently from Petro de Luanda, following a three weeks probation in England.

Can people stop going on like he is the next Drogba or Eto'o, please, you have seen him play in one tournament where he did brilliantly but not enough to earn him the same praise those two get.

Lets see how he turns out at Panathanaikos (spelling?) first before putting too much expectation on the young lad.

We are not going on like he is the next Drogba or Eto. Who knows how he is going to progress.
I for one, being shipped out here, from my beloved Manchester, am very excited to see first hand how he gets on here in the Greek league.
I was a regular at OT, so please let me enjoy a little excitement in seeing if Sir Alex has found a nice cheap new star who COULD turn out to be the next Drogba. If he does'nt make it, at least we have not lost millions!!

Good luck to him over there in Greece. I hope it proves to be a useful experience and helps him to further develop as a striker.

My excitement is due to the fact that he seems to be the perfect player for us at the moment. We lack height and a superb headerer aswell as an out and out goal scorer, he matches the criteria.

Sorry Redender, we have 30 cms of snow here at the moment, so the match was called off. The score you are quoting, is a week last Sundays game.
Leave your reporting to the locals.
They were hoping to play it tonight but looking out of the window now, they have no chance.
Manucho is hopefully in the squad for the Rangers game but the Panathinaikos coach has a history of not playing new players until they are fully bedded in.
Of course the fans want him playing straight away.

Snow? In Greece? What the fuck? How often does that happen?

Poor auld Manucho is gonna get a bit of a shock. Still, good preparation for winter in Manchester.

We dont get snow often but when we do, everything stops. What is good, is that we get another holiday. My weekend is now stretching to 4 days, a nice lonnnnng weekend, which included watching us smack the Gooners and will include hopefully us kicking some French backside on Wednesday. Oh, life is so hard!!

Man Utd's Manucho impressing everyone at Panathinakos - but must wait

Panathinaikos fans are being forced to wait to see new Manchester United loan signing Manucho in action.

The Angola star is unlikely to face Rangers in the UEFA Cup this week, as a source explained to The Herald: "Jose Peseiro, the Panathinaikos manager, didn't include Manucho in the squad for the league game with Atromitos last weekend although it was postponed in any case due to the heavy snow.

"Peseiro said after the first match with Rangers that Manucho has only a 10% chance of playing in the second leg. I think that now the percentage is only 5%. Peseiro is a coach who wants a new player to fully adapt to his team's requirements before starting him in the first eleven.

"I think that Manucho has a chance to be in the squad but almost no chance of starting the match.

"At Panathinaikos they are really very happy to have Manucho at their club. In his first training session with the team all the players were impressed by him.

In his second session he scored two goals and in the dressing room the defenders said that it is very difficult for someone to tackle him.

"The problem with Pana- thinaikos this year is that the players can't play well against teams with a tight defence. So they wanted a tall, strong player who can make a goal from half a chance and Manucho can do that. It is probably better for Rangers, therefore, that he does not play this week."

Yes, these are the views over here. He is not expected to play on Thursday, with a very slight chance of making the bench.

In the papers they are saying that he is very impressive in practice but unpredictable. One example was in a training match where the goalkeeper threw the ball out to a defender but Manucho read the situation and moved to intercept and instead of controlling the ball , he powerfully headed the ball back over the stranded goalkeeper into the net in one move from 20 mtrs. ( Yes, the opposing goalkeeper )

Everybody wants him to start but it looks unlikely. I am just hoping that the manager is holding an ace up his sleeve and surprises Rangers and the Panathinaikos support on Thursday night, by playing him.

I will go anyway and hopefully see the start of a very illustrious career.

Interesting. Something you don't see everyday, that - wonder what the outcome would be if he did it in an actual match!
