Meeting Ronaldo!!!

This is an email from my dad this morning:

Took a flight this morning (September 4th, 2008) from London Heathrow to New York (American Airlines) and was sitting in Economy. Got to talking to the girl next to me and after about an hour or so, she asks "hey are you a football fan" at which point I said, "my son and I are both United supporters". Well she says, "That's Ronaldo sitting up there 8 rows forward (In economy... humble!!!), saw him on my way in".

Too make a short story long, I asked the stewardess if she would mind asking him for a autograph....

5 minutes later, Ronaldo had walked back and said hello. We chatted for 5 minutes, he gave me his big toothy grin and couldn't have been nicer. Was really humble and friendly. Said thanks for the support and signed my American Airlines In Flight Magazine.

After getting off I saw him again in U.S. customs and he came up again, shook my hand, and wished me luck!

Super nice guy, has my full support this season....

*****Dad is sending me the American Airlines Flight magazine and I will post pictures when it arrives.*******

Economy?

Can't be right - I'd be surprised if he still uses public airliners!

You sure it was the washed up fat version?

Nice one. Kind of puts a slight scupper on that Guardian story painting him out to be a complete cock of a person. Unless it's made up

No joke... was in economy. Jeans, t-shirt, and red cap low over his eyes....

Dad was blown away that he would sit in economy.

I wouldn't be suprised if it a P.R.. stunt suggested to him by one of his advisors.

If genuine it does endeer you more to him.

If so he needs new advisors - Worst, most low-profile Page Wanking stunt ever!

Was close up to him in Denmark when he was with the Portuguese national team and he had two bodyguards so there was no way asking for an autograph or a photo.

Makes perfect sense

'Tell you what Cristiano go and sit in cattle class with your injured ankle, you never know, some bloke who has a kid that posts on an obscure United internet site might see you, that would be belting publicity.'

For every story like this, there's a story where he blanks a small child with a terminal illness requesting an autograph. Its all about being in the right place at the right time, and what gets reported and what doesn't. Some may look on his economy travel as endeering, others might look upon it as cheapskating! Whatever, I'd much prefer from a selfish footballing point of view that he'd treat this club and all of its supporters with far more respect than he has this summer, that'd endear me to him the most

Although congrats manutdpuer on meeting your hero, must have been a great experience

doing economy class on a trans-Atlantic flight would be a good way to travel incognito, especially for a rich footballer. few would recognize him when he lands, if they were even looking for him.

Great story OP. Really shows Ronnie to be a class act if true. Despite all the shite printed about him, no one knows him on a personal level so it's unfair to believe everything printed about him in the media.

Gone up in my estimation. BTW, I'm jealous.

Can't see why its "class" to fly economy when one's on 120K a week. It's like having to swim across the Atlantic if you were on normal wages and wanted to look down to earth.

Yes it doesn't make sense does it why would he do that when there is plenty of room in first class, unless there is a reason behind it, duh!

You wouldn't think ronaldo would sit in economy with an injured ankle for no reason do you, I mean not even opening up to the idea demonstrates what a dogmatic pleb you may well be.

His ankle isn't that bad now. I mean he was jogging last week. I don't think it's a stunt. I don't see him giving up his cars, taking up walking or using bus/tube whatever.

For all we know a flight attendant might have taken his fancy. Or maybe the story is made up? We don't know till we see the pics and even if there are pics, unless ronaldos in the pictures....you never know

regardless of bullshit if he's flying economy, good. Maybe he needs a reminder of what normal life is like. You can fly first class and still be noticed and sign things for people or be nice to them

I've been on that flight. Its a 757 with no First class and just 4 or 5 rows of Business class seats at the front that are not separated from Economy. The only difference is that there are 4 seats across in Business and 6 in Economy. Oh and you get your own personalised TV screen and better food. The AA flight to Boston is the same, so you always have a good nosey when you board and see who's sitting in the expensive seats.

My guess is that Ronaldo will have travelled Business Class. But I wonder why he was going to NYC?

How well is ronaldo known in america. I presume it's a country that probably doesn't know to much about him?

He is getting more known now but not from football. Perezhilton.com and other gossip websites were always posting about him when he was on vacation in L.A. My sister and mom would always ask if I knew who he was. He still gets mentioned every once in a while in the sports blogs for whatever girl he is seen dating. If Manchester United were to go on tour in the States he would be the best known footballer playing other than Beckham.
