He definitely was some kind of genetic human and kidney bean experiment that went horribly wrong

I don't think he had the concentration to really be a top centerhalf. But he saw himself as one even though he could do an excellent job at left back. His ability there was a big part of our revival in 01/02, even thogh we didn't win anything.

He had great games and he had poor games, like everyone, except his top level was very high at one point and his bottom level was basically The Championship standard at best. He also played well only next to Ferdinand, with Brown next to him in the second half of 2003-04 he was poor and basically cost us any chance of a title that we might have had (we were top of the league when Ferdinand played his last game against Wolves, admittedly we lost that game and dropped to 2nd but no one could foresee finishing 15 points behind Arsenal and behind Chelsea).

Played 361 games for the best club in England. You have to be quite good to do that.

He was pretty good at both CB and LB, but had the same issue with concentration in both positions.

Looking back on that defence of GNev/Rio/Wes/Silvestre (backed up by Barthez), concentration was a problem for each of them at some point in their careers.

I respected the guy and his time here, but I think Van Der Sar and Vidic is what propelled us to the European Glory years of 07-11

I loved his attacking contributions from left-back - Evra-like in some of his play but much better with final delivery and long passes.... like the 70-yard pass to Beckham at Stamford Bridge in 2002. Gorgeous.

Yeah, it's fair to say Heinze was the better player. And everyone really liked him up until, well, you know...

I'll always remember that cross to Rooney against Arsenal.. Just above the defender's head, but dropped perfectly for Rooney to control with his foot and volley it home.
