Mr O. Goal....

He's our second highest scorer with 9 goals.

Sure, some of those would probably have ended up as goals anyway, like Nani v Arsenal.

But is it a worry that only Rooney is in double figures?

Its not a worry as we're building the team around Rooney rather than him just plain out carrying us. It happened with Ronaldo previously, Ruud before that, its also happened with Cantona.

We're using our best player to his advantages. If Rooney were to not play, we would adapt as we normally do and play a different way imo.

Dangerous thing about bulding a team around one player is that if he is not playing, its not easy to adapt - especially without a similar replacement.

Take Arsenal loosing Van Persie - they dont look the same team without him.

The other point, is that players like Owen and Berbatov are getting little game time. If and when they do come into the side, will we be able to rely on them, especially in big games?

It would be if there were any other teams in the league with two strikers in double figures. But there isn't. So it's not.

The closest second striker to our number two would be Anelka, who's managed the same amount of league goals as Berbatov but took over 500 more minutes to rack them up.

If Rooney gets 30 odd this season. A big likelihood.
And Berbatov gets 15 odd this season. Also a likelihood.
And the odd midfielder chips in with a goal. I think we will be ok.

I was thinking about starting a thread on own goals and wondered why we've had so many this season. The only (stupid) idea I've had is that as we seem to have been "victims" of many in-offs in the past, and as some people believe that what goes round comes around, this is our year to benefit. Beyond that stupid notion, I've no real idea and suggest it's all down to chance.

I can imagine the RAWKers claiming that the opposition are conspiring with us just to spite them so it has its humerous side. But as the O.P. said, some would have gone in anyway.

How many did we get last year? I'm thinking that without those anomalous 3 against Portsmouth (which did not affect the outcome of the game), we're probably about where we were last year with these.

Not a single one, according to stretfordend.

If I was Carrick I'd be annoyed if I wasn't given the deflected goal.

Carrick said in the post-match interview that he'll be appealing to get it marked down as his.
Think it will be, was definitely going on target, bizarre that they had it down as an own goal.

With that said, Carrick now has 5 goals, I reckon he could get to 10 this season. Valencia, too, should manage to get 10+.

We're doing very well in goals from midfield this season.

there's a thread from last week on that. And it's interesting how the midfielders have stepped up and filled in on the goal threat

Most of the own goals have been scored under intense pressure. You got to give credit to the attack, and not just laugh it away.

I don't think it is a worry or concern. Rooney is playing in a similar role Ruud used to play for us. He is hogging the six yard box and is focused on finishing unlike previous seasons where he used to roam the pitch. We are playing great as a team at the moment and it is the pressure we create that have caused the own goals. Lady luck is also smiling upon us because we usually create a lot of pressure but get zero reward for it.

Mr. O. Goal

Strikes again...that makes ten. More than one way to get a double-figure strike partner for Rooney.

The ABUs are clearly in the agreement that these ten oggies are down to luck and referee-favourability, but the plain fact is most of these goals are due to the pressure and forcfeul manner in which we attack, effectively forcing these defenders into panic and deflections.
The one the fella scored on Saturday (the third when he volleyed it in) was a tad flukey, but the one from Giggs today was a goal all over, if it didn't go in off Collins, it would have been someone else.
